by: Robyn Snell

Johnson On Brickyard Pole

Jimmie Johnson put his Hendrick powered Chevrolet on the pole for Sunday's Allstate 400 at the Brickyard. Johnson turned a lap of 49.515 seconds around the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a speed of 181.763 mph. It was Johnson's 15th Sprint Cup pole in 239 career attempts. Starting on the outside of the front row is Mark Martin, who boldly predicted he was going to win this race. Martin turned a lap of 49.616 seconds, translating to a speed of 181.393 mph. Ryan Newman turned in the third fastest time and Kasey Kahne qualified fourth. -- Four-time Brickyard 400 winner Jeff Gordon will start in the fifth spot followed by Elliott Sadler, Kurt Busch, Jamie McMurray, Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth to round out the top ten. Four drivers failed to qualify, former Brickyard 400 winner Bill Elliott, Johnny Sauter, Stantion Barrett and Tony Raines. Australian Marcos Ambrose qualified for his second Cup race by putting his Little Debbie Ford in the 24th spot. His other Cup race was at Infineon Raceway, where he led some laps before succumbing to a faulty transmission.

UPDATE: According to sources close to Martin Truex Jr., Dale Earnhardt, Inc.(DEI) and Truex Jr. have come to a verbal agreement on a contract extension that would ink the #1 Bass Pro Shop driver through the 2011 Sprint Cup Season. Truex Jr., according to sources, had serious conversations with new team owner Tony Stewart of Stewart HAAS Racing about joining Stewart. The money simply was not there. Truex Jr. was intrigued by teaming with two-time Sprint Cup champion Stewart, but the money DEI has now offered the young flagship driver is too much to pass up. Truex Jr. and DEI are attempting to work out the final details of the contract, which are said to be minuscule, in time for an announcement next week in Long Pond, PA.(Capt Thunder)(7-22-2008)
UPDATE 2: Martin Truex Jr., who has been speculated as a candidate for every driver opening in the Sprint Cup garage, isn't going anywhere. The 28-year-old New Jersey native has agreed in principal to a two-year deal that will keep him at Dale Earnhardt Inc. through the 2010 season, multiple sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Sources said an official announcement is expected any day, and that details with multiple sponsors remain to be finalized. Truex, asked if he has an agreement, said: "We're getting there, yeah. Things are going well right. I'm pretty happy. I just want to think about racing this weekend." He has been linked most strongly with the #12 car at Penske Racing,#4 at Stewart-Haas Racing and #33 at Richard Childress Racing. The organization also is negotiating a long-term deal to keep #15-Paul Menard, who has improved from 34th in the point standings last season to 26th. Max Siegel, the president of global operations at DEI, would not comment on negotiations. But Siegel has been emphatic that Truex was a driver he wanted to build the company around.(

UPDTE 3: Jamie McMurray squelched reports on Saturday that he may be on his way out at Roush Fenway Racing. "If you guys want to print the truth, the truth is I'll be there with Crown Royal [as a sponsor]," McMurray said after his qualifying lap at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "It's 100 percent." McMurray's name had been connected with the fourth car at Richard Childress Racing. Sources close to the situation said RCR made a run at him, but couldn't get him out of the final year of his contract at Roush. "Richard is looking for a driver and I'm somewhat flattered to have my name on the list that another owner would want you," McMurray said. "But I will be in this car and not at Richard Childress Racing."

Tagliani Takes The Checkers In Edmonton

Edmonton, Alberta – Alex Tagliani picked up his first NASCAR win in just his eighth start in a stock car. He won the Edmonton Canadian Tire Series 100 at Rexall Speedway in convincing fashion by beating runner-up Scott Steckly to the line by 1.404 seconds.

Tagliani (No. 7 Wal-Mart/Ubisoft Ford), a Quebec native, made a pair of starts last season in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio, but is racing full-time this season after making the move from the open-wheel racing world.

Even though he beat current points leader Steckly (No. 22 Tow Truck in a Box/Diamond International Dodge) to the finish line by over a second, Tagliani still had to endure strong charges from both Steckly and teammate Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide Ford) at various times.

"Wow! What a thrill this is," said Tagliani. "We’ve had some problems this year with the equipment, but all the credit goes to the crew. They gave me a great car and all I had to do was drive."

Much more experienced in stock car racing, Steckly threw as many tricks as he could at Tagliani both on re-starts and on the 14-turn, 1.973-mile temporary road course located on the grounds of the Edmonton City Centre Airport.

"(Steckly) certainly made it difficult all over the track," Tagliani said. "His car has so much power this year and he was a handful, but once (Ranger) started putting pressure on him, I was able to drive away a little. He drove me clean, though, and I appreciate that."

"I tried everything I could," Steckly said. "He definitely had the best car today."

Steckly has finished in the top five every time out this season and continues his torrid pace in 2008. So far this season, he has three wins, a pair of seconds and a fourth-place finish.

"We really can’t be disappointed with the finish today. I certainly would have liked to have won, but it was a good points day for us."

For the second straight year Ranger started from the pole, but he again was not able to collect the win. However, with three road course events in the next four weeks, the accomplished road racer knows he can make some gains in the standings.

"I think we can make a move at this point in the season, but (Steckly) has been so good that it will not be easy to get back into the championship race."

J.R. Fitzpatrick (No. 84 Fitzpatrick Motorsports Chevrolet) and D.J. Kennington (Castrol/Haldex Dodge) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Don Thomson Jr., Jason Hathaway, Kerry Micks, Mark Dilley and Dave Whitlock rounded out the top 10.

Ranger and Tagliani started side-by-side on the front row. Ranger led the first lap, but Tagliani completed a pass for the lead between Turns 10 and 11 heading into the Rexall hairpin. It was a lead that he would not surrender the rest of the way.

The race had just two leaders, Ranger and Tagliani, and was slowed by caution three times for just eight laps.

Unofficially, in the championship point standings, Steckly stretched out his lead over Thomson to 131 points. Kennington holds third place followed by Ranger and Fitzpatrick.

The Canadian Tire Series makes the cross-country trip this week and will be at Montreal’s Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the NAPA 100 joining the NASCAR Nationwide Series for the huge NASCAR weekend in Quebec. A season ago, Kerry Micks (No. 02 Beyond Digital Imaging Ford) made a thrilling last lap pass of Ranger for the victory.
