... Witness the Birth of the Ba'ath Party.
The beginning of the end for the Iraqi Ba'ath Party came in 2003, when U.S. forces entered the country. This weekend, we go back to the party's 1968 rise to power with Saddam Hussein, the ruthless and charismatic leader who headed it for more than three decades.

... Get Up Close and Personal With Global Warming.
Visitors to Glacier National Park can actually see the effects of climate change. Grinnell Glacier, the largest of the park's 27 glaciers, lost 9 percent of its ice in 24 months. Scientists predict that the glaciers will be gone by 2021. In the latest installment of our Summer Travel series, we go to Glacier National Park to look at climate change up close, and learn about more about the park's remarkable ecosystem.

... Race Across America.
When she was 50, Candyce Deddens ran across the same Teddy Roosevelt quote three times in one week - the one about living life to the fullest. For Deddens, living life to the fullest meant quitting her job, selling her home, getting on "Teddy" (her bike named for the former President), and riding around the country for a year. Deddens got her rocket-scientist brother David hooked on cycling as well. Just in time for the Tour de France, we hear the siblings discuss a love of cycling developed late in life.

On Last Week's Show, We...

... Reached a Destination.
In an attempt to call attention to environmental issues in the Pacific Northwest, Erin McKittrick and Bretwood (Hig) Higman started walking last year. The young couple walked, rafted and skied--but mostly walked--from Seattle through Canada and Alaska, all the way up to the Aleutian Islands. We heard from them after they arrived at their final destination last weekend.

... Sought R&R in Qatar.
In the old days, U.S. soldiers stationed abroad would be let loose for a few days to let off steam. But that's not the case right now in Middle Eastern combat zones. Not only does the U.S. military completely prohibit alcohol, but soldiers never leave their base for fun because they could be targeted anywhere. Last weekend, we went to Qatar to learn how our military men and women are adjusting to the changes.

... Celebrated a Mariachi Mama.
Eighty-eight-year-old violinist Teresa Cuevas says being bitten by "Mariachi Fever" decades ago led her to form an extraordinary musical group. We heard the story of one of the first all-female mariachi bands in the United States, and of the tragedy that devastated its tight-knit community.
