Perspectives

BY ALAN CAMERON     eic@gpsworld.com

AFREF is designed to unify more than 50 different national coordinate reference frames of Africa into a single reference frame. Currently, maps of neighboring countries do not match at the national boundaries, creating obstacles to any regional development plan, inter-Africa transportation plans, geophysical research, and exploration for mineral resources — all of which Africa desperately needs.

Assalam Aleikoum: Africa Welcomes GNSS, Seeks Unified Reference Frame

This is where the pedal meets the metal, and the rubber meets the road: the stretching of GNSS system fabric to cover all populated areas of the world. Nowhere do GNSS scientists find more challenges than in Africa.  They are hardly unique in that regard, of course.

Resources for receivers, equipment, human development, and capacity building are very much needed. I urge every reader of this column to examine their corporate and/or individual assets and see how they might contribute to this effort.  read more>>

IGS Ponders the Implications of a Multiple GNSS World
What does the rise of European GNSS Galileo, along with other systems coming online, such as China's Beidou, mean for GNSS users? The International GNSS Service (IGS) is considering that very question, and anybody interested in the future use of GNSS for observing for high-accuracy applications will want to review its white paper on the subject. read more>>

Galileo Key to European Defense, Says Parliament
While the European Parliament agrees that European space policy should not support the weaponization of space, it nevertheless recognizes the need for Galileo to serve the European Union's defense and security — a change from its earlier stance on the issue. read more>>

Researchers Make Galileo Double Difference Measurements
Researchers at the Netherlands' Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) have produced the first double-difference measurements from Galileo satellite signals, tracking both GIOVE-A and GIOVE-B satellite with Septentrio GNSS receivers.

VirtuaLites: Another GPS Augmentation

The integration of GPS and INS systems has long been used to provide a robust, precise position solution for use in high accuracy applications, such as precision agriculture. The traditional method of integrating these two systems is through the use of data fusion techniques such as the Extended Kalman filter or other non-linear filtering techniques. Traditionally the GPS/INS Kalman filter is employed in either a loosely-coupled, tightly-coupled or ultra tight or deep-coupling arrangement.   more »
