Tonight On The CBS
Evening News
Here’s an
early look at what we are working on for tonight’s broadcast from
Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric:
Hi everyone. We're broadcasting from Amman, Jordan, tonight to bring you full coverage
of Senator Barack Obama's historic trip to the Middle
East.
Senator Obama arrived today in Baghdad,
where he met with senior Iraqi politicians, including Prime Minister Nouri
al Maliki. This first stop in Iraq comes after one of the
calmest weekends there in recent memory. David
Martin has the very latest on this leg of the presumptive
Democratic presidential nominee's trip.
Meanwhile, Senator John McCain is using his rival's trip as an opportunity
to critique Obama’s Iraq War positions - especially Obama’s
opposition to the troop surge. Jim
Axelrod explains.
And later in the broadcast, I'll
show you some of what Obama is trying to accomplish this week. I'll also examine the challenges that
the Middle East will pose to the next president of the United States
- no matter whom is elected.
Back in the United States:
The landmark first terrorism trial in decades began today at the naval base
in Cuba.
It's the military tribunal of a Guantanamo
Bay inmate, the
former driver and bodyguard for Osama bin Laden. Bob Orr has the story.
While plenty of Americans say they don't know much about Barack Obama's
foreign policy … lots of foreigners are watching the American
presidential campaign extremely closely. I'll
look at Obama's reputation outside
of our borders.
I hope you'll join us tonight
for all this and more from Amman.

THE NEELY’S COOK: The

Home with the Neely’s features Pat and Gina Neely,
co-owners of Neely's Bar-B-Q in Memphis,
Tennessee. The Neely's have
long been known for great cooking all over the South - after all, it's the
food and the area they know best. But what about the rest of the country?
Pat and Gina Neely are taking over Road
Tasted, a show on the Food Network that allows them to travel
all around the nation looking for family run businesses and one of a kind
edibles. And Tuesday morning they will join us with a look at some of the
more unusual things they found, and to show us some unusual barbeque
recipes of their own.
SARAH BAREILLES PERFORMS!:
Singer/song writer Sarah Bareilles achieved mainstream success this year
due to her hit single Love Song.
After being featured on a Rhapsody commercial in 2007, Love Song began climbing the Billboard
pop charts, and jumped from number 73 to number 16… and kept climbing
until it reached the number one spot in April 2008. The young pianist will join
us live Tuesday morning in our studio to perform the hit song Bottle It Up from her latest album Little Voice.
REAL SIMPLE NEW USES FOR OLD THINGS:
One of Real Simple's most
popular columns is New Uses for Old Things: taking items you already have around
the house and making them work double-duty for you. During this tough
economic climate, it's even more popular, because it's a good money-saver
too. Tuesday morning, Kris Connell will join us with a number of items you
can repurpose and reuse.
WORLD SANTA CLAUS CONFERENCE IN COPENHAGEN:
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in a Danish amusement park
where Santa Clauses from around the world will gather for their annual
three-day congress. The World Santa Claus Congress kicked off Monday and will
bring together 136 red-clad delegates from different countries. The Santas
will partake in activities such as a bicycle parade and hula hoop dancing. Mark Phillips will have more on the
fifty one year old event and how it has transformed from a way to entertain
children into a tradition for shopping mall "Santa’s"
worldwide.
