"Harry, We're Coming Down The Home Stretch"
Hey Harry,
I hope you’re finding the articles in my newsletter
(21 Great Ways to Become a Monster Jazz Musician)
to be helpful for your own jazz pursuits.
I’ve been playing music for a long time now; a
little over 20 years(Wow, when I put it that
way I feel pretty old).
Those articles are lessons I’ve learned along the way;
the hard way.
I’ll be honest. My path through jazz has not been
easy. There have been plenty of trials & tribulations
and ups & downs along the way.
Now, don’t get me wrong.
It’s been more than worth it. I think I love jazz more
now than I ever have.
But Harry let me ask you a question:
Have you ever wondered if you’re practicing
the right stuff?
Do you ever ask yourself if you have
‘what it takes’?
Do you ever feel that your playing is just not
‘Good enough’?
If so you are not alone. In fact I think you and I
might have a lot in common.
I’ve had all of those thoughts, many times,
and all kinds of other doubts about my music.
I struggled for a long time wondering if I was
ever going to reach my goal of becoming the
jazz musician I wanted so bad to be.
Luckily I never quit. I just love jazz too much.
And besides, I knew I could never be a ‘cubicle monkey’
or hold down a dreaded ‘day job’.
Or even worse, become a junior high band teacher!
Just kidding, I loved band in junior high. In fact
it’s the only class I didn’t cause trouble in ;-)
But I just always knew I wanted to be a player.
I wanted to be out there doin’ it; making music.
Instead, I dug my heels in and got to work trying
to figure what it was that all the great players
out there did/do differently.
Well, I’m happy to say I finally figured it out.
Or rather, I figured out a system that works for me.
And I’m pretty damn sure (I’ve got plenty of friends,
students and examples to back up that assertion) it
would work for anyone.
I’m just not going to say that this is how
Charlie Parker revolutionized jazz, or Miles became
the badass that he was.
They certainly used many of the same principles
I’ve put together.
They probably just didn’t think about it as a ‘system’.
They just did it. Some people are just ‘naturals’.
For the rest of us, well…
Let me clarify that. I do consider my self a ‘natural’.
And I bet you are too.
If jazz resonates with you and you ‘get’ it, then
I’d be willing to bet you’re a ‘natural’, too.
You may just be lacking the habits, skills and
mindset necessary to become the musician
you wish you were.
Now, you might remember that I sent out a couple of
emails hinting at a course I was putting together.
I know, I know. I said it was almost done.
Damn Murphy’s Laws! Yeah, I’m about 4 months behind
schedule. I got so many great questions and comments
to my surveys; it took me awhile to put the finishing
touches on the course.
But mostly I’m just an idiot with computers. Figuring
out this internet and computer stuff (like how I would
get the course to you, for instance) has been a serious
challenge; much harder than jazz ;-(
But alas, it’s done. I really, really, really should
be getting it out there this week. I’ll let you know
when I finally finish. I tell you all about it then.
Oh and I’ll have some other cool new stuff for you on
Tuesday or Wednesday so make sure to watch your inbox
for it!
Until next time…
Dedicated to Your Musical Success,
Chris Punis
P.S. I’d love to hear what you’re up to with music.
Drop me a line (hit your reply button and I’ll get it)
and let me know what your practicing or working on.
I won’t be able to respond to everyone of course but
if you’re doing something really cool…
P.P.S. Don’t forget to watch your inbox for the other
cool stuff!
