Howard Chapman, Editor, writes:

Construction industry worries continue to gather pace. Plimsoll
Analysis reports about a further 15,000 job losses and MTW Research
says the housebuilding market may lose more than 75% of its value
up to 2009. However, self-build and renovation experts BuildStore
think that the credit crunch is having less of an impact in its
sector. We have a review by Peter Levchenko of Polish Subcontracting
into the effects on UK building trades of recent changes in eastern
European migration patterns. You can check out these and other reports
via the summaries and links below.

Last Thursday saw the launch of the latest report, 'Greening UK
cities' buildings' at an event held in partnership with the All Party
Urban Development Group. This group promotes urban renewal and
sustainable development in the UK. They looked at the government's
record on green building policies and concluded that, rather than
opting for headline-grabbing zero-carbon new developments, there
should be a greater concentration on existing buildings - which make
up 99 per cent of the nation's stock and account for nearly 20 per cent of
overall carbon emissions. AET, which provides sustainable retro-fit air
conditioning explains why energy efficiency of current commercial
building stock is the key to carbon reduction.

PRI, an energy management and smart metering specialist, tells us about
a new system for carbon monitoring that displays instant and
accurate energy-consumption data. This has been installed at the
Institute of Mechanical Engineers in London, which reports "enhanced
engagement and awareness from staff and visitors".

DuPont Building Innovations takes a close look at critical issues
concerning ageing, quality and durability of roofing membranes.
Lignacite boasts a new A+ rating for its blocks and masonry. Celotex
has achieved complete Class O fire performance compliance with PIR
Insulation boards, making them ideal for the demanding requirements of
hospitals and schools. Marshall-Tufflex has a PVC-U cable
containment system made from a material with biocidal properties,
which will be welcome news to hospitals in their battle with
infections.

Finally, following the governments latest crackdown on excessive
waste in the building industry, there are now much tighter
restrictions including the legal requirement for 'Site Waste
Management Plans'. Neales Waste Management explains how it can
advise on this front.

I hope you find this issue of our weekly newsletter useful. In
addition to the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are
more than 27,000 more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so
do take a look if you can.

[1] COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS KEY TO CARBON REDUCTION
(AET, 18 Jul 2008)

Energy efficiency of current commercial building stock key to carbon
reduction says report into green construction policies within UK
cities, 'Greening UK Cities' Buildings'. At Advanced Ergonomic
Technologies (AET), the UK based provider of commercial underfloor air
conditioning, the refurbishment of existing office buildings has been
the driving force behind the company's emergence as the leading
supplier of this sustainable retro-fit solution. Underfloor air
conditioning removes the need for major structural change and the
creation of large false ceiling voids.

[2] NEW PRI CARBON VIEW GIVES COMPLETE ENERGY DISPLAY
(PRI, 18 Jul 2008)

PRI, as an energy management and smart metering specialist, has
developed a range of products to improve carbon reduction. Using
smart electric, gas and water meters, Carbon View communicates
wirelessly over a computer network to retrieve data from which CO2
emissions are calculated. The data is displayed as an
easy-to-interpret set of dials that move in real-time with actual
consumption. The accurate information is displayed in a
visually-appealing way for staff and customers to see and engage - the
product's design can be tailored to brand and corporate message.

[3] REVIEW OF CRITICAL ISSUES WITH ROOFING MEMBRANES
(DuPont Building Innovations (Tyvek and Energain), 15 Jul 2008)

Nick Williams, Technical Manager at DuPont Building Innovations takes
a close look at critical issues concerning ageing, quality and
durability of roofing membranes. The EU's Directive on the Energy
Performance of Buildings means that we are all striving toward making
our buildings more energy efficient. This is helped to some extent by
the guidance contained in Approved Document L which addresses the
design of the building envelope. A key requirement of this document
is the building's 'design air permeability' otherwise known as
'air-tightness.' Complying with this obligation is not an easy task,
but with the availability of airtight membranes such as DuPont Tyvek
there is some assistance from manufacturers.
