Review: Apple iPhone 3G
The iPhone 3G is the birth of a new computing platform. It's also one very cool phone.

Dan: Did I call it or what? Just two days after I tell the world “Don't Buy the iPhone 3G” my own magazine gives it a four-star rating, an Editors' Choice, and suggests that this is the birth of an entirely new computing platform. That aside, I still don't think it is worth the upgrade. Current iPhone users have no reason to upgrade because they can get the software improvements for free. And unless you are going to change carriers, neither do Verizon or Sprint customers. What is the big deal here?

Kyle: Spoken like someone who's never surfed the Web with EDGE connectivity! As an AT&T subscriber, the combo of 3G plus a low(er) price makes the iPhone 3G very tempting. And all I'm hearing this week is "this-or-that iPhone app is sooo cool!" The Apple brainwashing is irresistible!

How To: Build an XP SP3 Recovery Disc
Think you can use your original Windows XP disc to restore your PC? Think again.

Kyle: This is an incredibly useful story dealing with an issue most people don't think about: what happens if you need to start fresh with a new XP SP3 install? The paradox is that by the time you need a recovery disc, it's too late to make one. Dan, any idea where the install disc is that came with your computer? Mine's probably either lost in a junk drawer or safely hidden in the middle of a huge spindle of CDs.

Dan: Last time I had to rebuild my desktop, I spent hours downloading every patch and update released in the two years since I bought my systems. And restarting after every installation. What a drag. The next time I crash that hard, I'm installing Vista. Maybe, with a little luck, Windows 7 will be available by then.

News: Apple Climbs Into Third Place in U.S. PC Market
Apple Computer cracked the top three in U.S. PC sales for the second quarter, according to surveys released by both Gartner and IDC.

Dan: Gaining two points over the last year is a big win for Apple, but before we herald in the dawn of a new world dominated by Macs, lets remember the numbers here. Apple owns just 8.1 percent of the U.S. market. Compare that to Dell's 29.1 percent and HP's 25.7 percent. Do you ever think Apple will pass 10 percent? I say no way.

Kyle: It wasn't last year that was the critical one for Apple to gain marketshare, I think it's this year. A lot of XP machines (like, uh, my work laptop) are starting to show their age, and the thought of upgrading to Vista is much less appealing right now than the thought of upgrading to Leopard. (The brainwashing is working.)

Roundup: Intel Unveils Centrino 2
Intel's new feature-rich mobile platform will offer a faster front-side bus, energy-efficient CPUs, DDR3 memory support, new wireless cards, and a new Gigabit controller.

Kyle: This was a big week for Intel. The long-awaited (and feature-laden) Montevina chipset launches with its Centrino 2 moniker, and the company turns 40. But even so, I think a lot of eyes are on the embattled AMD, which got a new CEO this week. Dan, is the processor war starting to look a bit one-sided?

Dan: Starting? We are getting pretty close to a TKO, bringing a whole new meaning to Technical Knock Out. Thing is, AMD is still competitive on the mid-range processors, essentially a value business. Where Intel's lead is growing is at the high end and, thanks to solutions like the Centrino 2, the mobile market. Unfortunately for AMD, those two segments are the ones that generate the most profit.
