A July heat wave is gripping my little corner of the United States. Fans and air conditioners are turned to high, children are running through garden sprinklers, and dogs are cooling off in puddles. In honor of my hard working father-in-law and the rest of our farm family, who are out baling the season's second cutting of hay, I present a delightfully cooling assortment of summer recipes. Bon appetit!

Frosty Sorbet Recipes

Sorbet is definitely one of the most refreshing treats of summer. Any flavor is delicious, but why not make your homemade sorbet downright heavenly by using fresh, seasonal ingredients? The result will be beyond anything you can buy in a freezer case - I promise!

Easy Chicken Gumbo

Gumbo is a classic year-round meal in Louisiana. Try this easy to make chicken sausage gumbo recipe for a wonderful, comforting main dish. The bright flavors of seasonal tomatoes and green peppers enhance the experience of serving this during the summertime.

Impressive Banana Tarte Tatin

Banana Tarte Tatin is an easy dessert to make on short notice for parties and picnics! Ripe bananas are always in season and frozen puff pastry can be found in most major grocery stores. Pull the puff pastry out to thaw while you slice bananas and simmer the rum sauce. Best of all, this recipe is very forgiving. If you simply have no time to make rum sauce from scratch, use store-bought caramel sauce kicked up with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
