GARY LINEKER ON THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
The 137th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale has so far been a real battle against the elements.

One man who has dealt with it better than most is Greg Norman and for him to hit 70 in each of his first two rounds is a fantastic story.

The Great White Shark doesn't play too frequently as he has just got married to tennis great Chris Evert, but what a honeymoon he is having.

The two-time Open winner is rolling back the years and it would be a hell of a story if he could win it.

Not many people would have predicted he would be right in contention at this stage. I'm not saying who my predictions were as it would be a bit embarrassing!

Because of the severe weather one or two of the holes have played really hard and as a result the course has come under fire from a few players.

I think that's a little unfair. It's the same conditions for everyone and this is definitely one of the best links courses on the rota.

And besides, the only players to whinge are generally the ones who aren't doing that well.

Our BBC studio position looks down the 18th fairway up to the clubhouse, so we are perfectly placed to sneak out to watch the potential winner stride up the fairway on Sunday.

Who that winner will be is anyone's guess. The weekend will be largely dependent on the weather.

What would be nice is if an all-round field were duelling for the Claret Jug with players from Europe challenging the Birkdale dominance of Americans and Australians.

Enjoy the action,

Gary
