Important Stories and More from Ziff Davis

Apple Finally Sues Psystar
After months of speculation, the other shoe has dropped. Mac clone company Psystar finally has drawn Apple’s fire. The Mac original company is suing, but Steve Jobs also wants something far more devastating than money from the Mac clone maker. I won’t spoil the surprise here. Read PCMag’s news story for all the details.

Big Media Strikes Again with iPhone
I honestly don’t care what John C. Dvorak says, the iPhone 3G is an important product and we at PCMag (along with every other media outlet) had to cover it. Dvorak thinks many of us did this to the exclusion of nearly all else. He even accuses us of giving the cold shoulder to other, equally sexy and important products. To you, sir, I have just two words: LG Dare. Go ahead, read Dvorak’s diatribe. Just know that I’m not buying it. By the way, if you haven’t had your fill of iPhone mania, ExtremeTech’s Jim Lynch and former EIC and PCMag blogger Michael J. Miller have two very different views of the new 3G edition. Enough, Already, with the iPhone
Build an XP SP3 Recovery Disc
Pop quiz: Where, exactly, is the recovery disc for your PC? That’s what I thought—you have no idea. No worries; this story was written just for you. Apparently, you don’t have to have your manufacturer-supplied recovery disc on hand. Instead, you can build your own and probably end up with a one that really does return your PC to a much more usable state. Click to follow PCMag’s step-by-step instructions.
Webroot Launches Secure Online Backup Service
Webroot, a company best known for creating the highly effective Spy Sweeper antispyware software, is now in the software-as-a-service business. It’s launching a brand-new online backup product. PCMag’s report has more info.
Xbox 360 to Stream Netflix Movies
I’ve got to hand it to Microsoft. The company is slowly but surely transforming the Xbox 360 into the ultimate set-top box for gaming, multimedia, and, now, on-demand movies. It announced a bunch of upgrades to the popular console at this week’s E3 conference, not the least of which is streaming Netflix movies. Very cool. More details on the site.
John McCain Can’t Read My Latest Column
Republican presidential hopeful John McCain is now on record stating that he’s a technology illiterate. Many people think this isn’t a big deal. I say it makes him unelectable. Get my full argument in this week’s column.

Insane Performance at an Insane Price
Honestly, I’ve never been a big fan of the Alienware PC designs, which typically look like a cross between a 1957 Buick and a Predator helmet. Still you can’t argue with performance, and the latest Alienware, the Area-51 ALX, has that in spades. It managed some of the best gaming and multimedia performance numbers PC Magazine Labs has ever seen. You’ll pay for this much gaming power, though. The hulking system costs nearly $7,000. Too rich for my blood, but if you love PC gaming, how can you say no?
Review: Hauppauge HD DVR
I have an HD DVR at home, but currently there’s no way for me to get my recorded HD content off the box and onto my PC, or even ported to, say, a DVD-R for archival purposes. ExtremeTech analysts, however, have found a way. Hauppauge's new HD DVR lets you port the content from gaming consoles and set-top boxes to your PC, but not without some caveats. You know what to do if you want to learn more.
Access Everywhere: The Definitive Guide to Wi-Fi
I honestly don’t know how we lived in a world before there was ubiquitous connectivity. I’m always online, whether it’s through my home and office PCs, my laptop EV-DO card, or my Treo’s slow cellular connection. On the other hand, I realize that not everyone has access to all these gadgets or knows exactly how to use them in order to stay connected 24/7. This guide should change all that. PCMag’s Eric Griffith covers everything—and I mean everything—you need to know about finding or making the right Wi-Fi connection, where and when you want it.
