Nations Zero: War And Peace In The 21st Century |
| |
Part of BBC World's Peacemakers Season
Nations Zero travels to four countries that have recently experienced civil conflict - Bosnia-Herzegovina, Colombia, Rwanda and Afghanistan - and finds out that the victims are primarily civilians, not soldiers, who suffer because of the damage that conflict does to a country's economy. In Nations Zero, Paul Collier, Oxford Professor and author of Breaking the Conflict Trap, pours scorn on Mao and others who share his belief that "Wars will last as long as there's a heaven and earth". Collier points out that nine out of 10 conflicts are fought in poor nations even though tensions in richer countries can be just as severe, and believes winning the peace means investing heavily in economic development.

The World Debate: Energy Security- A Global Crisis? |
| |
Energy companies and leading producers such as Russia and the oil producing nations publicly state that there is no energy crisis, and that talk of one is an exaggeration. However, there are increasing doubts about the security of supplies in private. Today, it should not be taken for granted that switches will always bring electricity, taps can be turned to provide gas, and there will be affordable fuel for cars. In this debate, leading politicians including a representative from the Chinese National People's Congress and businessmen including a spokesperson from the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, assess the threats to world energy supplies and examine whether energy insecurity is the new global threat.
