Daytona (Statistically Speaking)
by: Mike Wells

Well, folks, we are back around to Daytona, the third restrictor plate race of 2008. There have been a few that have done well in the first two restrictor plate races who should once again fair well.

Tough economy takes toll on Ganassi and Franchitti’s #40 team

Though the top story at the end of this week likely will be the expected announcement of the pairing of Mark Martin and the Rick Hendrick No. 5 car, another big story from the beginning of the week resides at Chip Ganassi Racing. On Tuesday, Chip Ganassi and Felix Sabates announced that they were shutting down the #40 Sprint Cup team of driver Dario Franchitti, due to lack of sponsorship. The approximately 70 employees working on the team also received pink slips. This has not been the year the Franchitti dreamed of, after winning the Indy 500 and IRL championship last year.

Office Depot Will Back Stewart

Tony Stewart has a few obstacles left before he officially can become a Sprint Cup team owner, but sponsorship isn't one of them. The two-time Cup champion has reached an agreement that would make Office Depot a primary sponsor on his car if he finalizes a deal with Haas CNC Racing, a source close to the negotiations said on Thursday. Sources said an announcement could be made as early as the weekend of the July 27 race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is located about an hour from Stewart's hometown of Columbus. But before anything can happen Stewart would have to be released from the final year of his contact with Joe Gibbs Racing. JGR president J.D. Gibbs said on Friday at Daytona International Speedway that he remained in negotiations to extend Stewart's deal past 2009. Gibbs went so far as to say the organization could expand to four teams next season to make room for 18-year-old phenom Joey Logano

_UPDATE Among the hot but unconfirmed rumors making the rounds in the Sprint Cup garage this week are that Richard Childress Racing will land UPS as a sponsor for Clint Bowyer’s #07 Chevrolet. Multiple sources indicated that Bowyer’s car was the favorite to take the sponsorship over from Michael Waltrip Racing and David Reutimann. One source close to the negotiations said RCR initially offered UPS #31-Jeff Burton, 41, but the delivery company wanted a younger driver with whom it could create a long-term identity and Bowyer is just 29. Burton, instead, will be sponsored next year by Caterpillar.(SPEEDtv)(7-6-2008

__Ragan to return to #6 in 2009: Roush Fenway Racing officials confirmed Sunday that David Ragan will be back behind the wheel of the #6 Ford next season. Sponsor negotiations to replace AAA on the #6 are awaiting the completion of Stewart’s deal, though team sources confirmed that Office Depot will not be back at Roush Fenway Racing next season.(SPEEDtv)(7-6-2008) Comment here

__UPDATE 2: What DEI didn’t announce was a sponsor for Almirola, but DEI President Max Siegel indicated that the team has solidified those plans. Currently, the U.S. Army sponsors that car but it has not announced whether it would remain with DEI next year as it goes through its annual bidding process. "We’re fine," Siegel said. "We’ll make the announcements of who it is over time." Siegel said the team is still looking for sponsorship for the #01 car of Smith to be able to keep that car on the track and he said there was nothing new to report on Truex’s status for next year. Truex faces the prospect of losing 100 or 150 points as penalty for his team presenting a car that didn’t meet NASCAR’s roof templates.(SceneDaily)(7-6-2008

FREE Coke Zero: For several members of the Coca-Cola Racing Family, a victory in the inaugural Coke Zero 400 Powered By Coca-Cola was so close they could taste it. Although the drivers were unsuccessful in their bid to take the checkered flag, millions of fans in the U.S. still have an opportunity to get a "Taste of Victory" of their own. Through the Coke Zero "Taste of Victory" program, if one of the 13 drivers sponsored by Coca-Cola won the Coke Zero 400, fans would be able to enjoy the Real Coke Taste and Zero Calories of Coke Zero for free. Even without a victory, Kyle Petty - a founding member of the Coca-Cola Racing Family and analyst in the TNT broadcast booth for the race - announced that in celebration of the inaugural Coke Zero 400 at iconic Daytona International Speedway, fans would still be able to receive free Coke Zero. Any U.S. resident 13 years of age or older can simply visit www.CokeZero.com through July 13 and follow the instructions to receive a coupon for a free 20-ounce bottle of Coke Zero. Great Scott, Steckly Wins Again

St. Eustache, Que. – In front of a capacity crowd at Autodrome St. Eustache, Scott Steckly (No. 22 Tow Truck in a Box/Erb Group Dodge) won the Kodak 250. It was the first NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio event at the track and Steckly took advantage of the excitement to win for the second week in a row and for the third time in four races this year.

With Don Thomson Jr. (No. 4 Home Hardware Chevrolet) leading on lap 188 his Chevy suffered an electrical malfunction and stopped on the track and handed Steckly the lead. He took the ball and ran the rest of the way eventually beating D.J. Kennington (No. 17 Castrol/NPP Dodge) to the line by 2.531 seconds.

Dating back to last season, the Milverton, Ontario driver has won four of the last five Canadian Tire Series events. He cites nothing new in the program just a run of luck that he would like to continue as long as possible.

"We’re not doing anything different than we’ve ever done," said the victor. "Just running the same program and not trying to get fancy with anything. Other guys are just as fast. I have to say that we’ve been very fortunate and I’ll take it."

Runner-up Kennington finished second to Steckly a week ago at Barrie Speedway.

"I’m really starting not to like him," joked Kennington. "He’s got a great car right now and there was little I could do about it."

Kerry Micks (No. 02 Beyond Digital Imaging Ford) finished third and feels it sets the tone for the heart of the schedule coming up this month and next.

"We came here wanting to finish on the podium and we did," said Micks. "This is where we want to start making a move and carry some momentum for the next several races."

Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide Ford) and J.R. Fitzpatrick (No. 84 Fitzpatrick Motorsports Chevrolet) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Ron Beauchamp Jr., Peter Gibbons, Patrick Laperle, in his series debut, Brad Graham and Doug Brown rounded out the top 10.

There were seven lead changes in the race involving six drivers and the pace was slowed 11 times for 51 laps for caution.

Unofficially, in the championship point standings, Steckly has a 113-point advantage on Kennington.

The Canadian Tire Series begins its two-race swing through western Canada in two weeks with the A&W 300 on July 19 at SunValley Speedway in Vernon, B.C. which will be followed a week later by the Canadian Tire Series 100 on the temporary road course at City Centre Airport in Edmonton, Alb., as part of the Rexall Edmonton Indy weekend.
