Companies of all sizes are rapidly embracing server virtualization to reduce management of server sprawl, cut administrative chores, and save money. As this new infrastructure becomes more common, another element must be taken into account. Namely, how does a company match its storage infrastructure to its application server environments to maximize the benefits of virtualization? By virtualizing storage, a company can use any or all of its storage resources as one shared pool of storage. This is accomplished through a virtualization layer that consolidates connections to all the storage devices and presents them as one unified pool. When combined with other virtualization technologies, additional synergies can be realized, and the data center can finally live up to its full potential.
