  Inside: This Week in Autos
It was a dismal week for the stock market and especially grim for GM and Ford. Both companies saw their shares plunge in reaction to Goldman Sach's downgrade of The General. Goldman said that GM's shares will "continue to underperform as market fundamentals deteriorateshares to continue to underperform as market fundamentals deteriorate" and that the company will soon need to raise capital. Seen against this background, Detroit bureau chief David Welch reported on rumors of a merger between the two. While the rumors were quickly shot down, Welch points out that the idea is not without merit, writing that their combined "total cash hoard of nearly $50 billion could help them survive what most analysts expect to be a year or two of weak sales." Unlikely? Yes, but then again so would have been the notion as little as a decade ago that both automotive giants would be now struggling for their very existences.
