LEADING OFF: Air Travel Is A Bitch
CRJs, Crushed Gear and Wearing Pajamas
By Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter
To borrow a line from Howard Beal: I'M MAD AS HELL!

I started out thinking about doing a rant about a roller-full of my gear being mishandled during flight on a CRJ (Canadian Regional Jet) to Colorado, but now I figure "What the hell?" Let's do a full-tilt-boogie bitch session on how airlines are killing us!

SI's Robert Beck writes that the recent U.S. Open is "the best" event that he has ever covered.

The "Sports Shooter Conversation" returns with a Q & A about covering the NBA Finals with the Los Angeles Times' Wally Skalij. Matt Miller of the Omaha World - Herald gives us the lowdown on covering the College World Series (Editors Note: YEA BULDOGS!)

Kim Komenich ponders our profession after a visit to a Lee Friedlander retrospective.

A couple of internal Sports Shooter notes: Welcome to Adorama the new sponsor of the SportsShooter.com Student Photographer of the Year Contest and "welcome back" to Jeff Snyder. The upcoming Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp has added Dave Honl and Mike Goulding to the faculty Š and yes, there is still room in this workshop.

The Greatest Event I Have Ever Shot
By Robert Beck, Sports Illustrated
I have spent a lot of time thinking about writing this piece. I have even started it a couple of times. But trying to describe the incredible experience that was the 2008 U.S. Open on the South Course at Torrey Pines is more confounding than covering the tournament. There are tales within tales and stories that will grow grander, perhaps becoming mythical, over time. So, in advance, please forgive me if weave through this yarn as crookedly as I might play a round of golf.

ASK SPORTS SHOOTER Getting Paid
By Matt Mendelsohn

(Editor's Note: Each month Sports Shooter will take a question sent in or a topic from the SportsShooter.com message board and get an answer. I received a question that has been discussed somewhat on the SportsShooter.com Message Board. For this specific question on the topic of "shooting for free" I asked Washington D.C. - based photographer Matt Mendelsohn to write an response.)

Robert,
I have a question: I've done a lot of "free" shooting for my old high school gymnastics program, including making state/national championship posters for the team the last three years. I've mostly agreed to do it all for free because of the unrestricted access to the team and my personal relationships with the girls and coaches and the need to build a portfolio. But this past year I've been at college - however managed to get back for a substantial number of meets - and it's becoming harder to say "yes" as my friends graduate and of course as my needs grow financially.

Countdown To The Beijing Olympic Games
By David McIntyre
As the 2008 Beijing Summer Games are just around the corner --- August 8th, 2008 to be exact --- I thought I would take this opportunity to give some insight into what people might expect, not expect, and also feel free to ask so that I can try to answer later.

Practical tips for the Beijing Olympics
By Frank Folwell
I visited Beijing for the first time in 1978. The Cultural Revolution had just ended. The Gang of Four was blamed for everything. Beijing was a different place. There were no tall buildings or super highways. In fact, there were few cars on the streets. The biggest danger was dodging the thousands of black bicycles.

Outside of Beijing, Westerners were unknown. If we stopped in a public place we often drew a crowd, a hundred people or more, staring at us without saying a word.

SPORTS SHOOTER CONVERSATION: A Q & A with Wally Skalij On Covering The NBA Finals
Los Angeles Times staff photographer shares his insights
By Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter
(The Los Angeles Times' Wally Skalij covered the recent Boston Celtics - LA Lakers NBA Finals. Sports Shooter sat down with him to discuss the trials and tribulations of covering this highly anticipated match up, Skalij had covered the Lakers four previous appears in the Finals.)

Sports Shooter: What do you think the biggest difference between covering the regular season --- or for that matter the early round of the NBA
Playoffs --- and covering the NBA Finals?

Covering a Cinderella Story
By Matt Miller, Omaha World - Herald
Fresno State celebrates winning the College World Series, 6-1 at the University of Georgia UGA Bulldogs against the Fresno State Bulldogs at the College World Series CWS at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb., on June 25, 2008.
Fresno State capped a Cinderella season when right fielder Steve Detwiler pulled in a fly ball in the bottom of the ninth inning and clinched this year's College World Series in Omaha. Players on the field and bench sprinted toward the pitching mound where they met for the traditional dog pile celebration. The team had triumphed despite low rankings and finished as champions with one of the most unique seasons in college baseball history.

The Cloud is Falling
By Vincent Laforet
A circular fisheye lens captures a river to river view of the Manhattan skyline.
This past year has been one of the roughest years for the newspaper and magazine industry --- and truth be told --- the outlook for the next few years looks even grimmer.

PHOTOGRAPHER'S TOY BOX: In the Olympic Tool Bag
By George Bridges, McClatchy Tribune Photo Service
With the Olympic Opening Ceremonies rapidly approaching it's time to get those last few items ready for covering the games.

The Games promise to be exciting and challenging and the big time difference will make for a few more hurdles to jump through in dealing with being away from home for so long. Thankfully technology steps in to make the photographer's life a bit easier.

IN THE BAG: 'Rookie' Packs For First Olympics
By Dan Powers, Appleton Post-Crescent
This August is going to be one to remember. I got luckyŠreal lucky. I'm going to be part of the Gannett team that is covering the Olympics in Beijing, China. WowŠI still can't believe it. Did I mention it's the Olympics?! Ya think I'm excited? OhŠI'm excited. This excitement, however, comes bundled with anticipation, urgency and a touch of nervousness. You see this is my first Olympics, which means I'm a rookie. A rookie who asks the question, "What the hell am I supposed to pack for this international event?" Well, I'll give it a shotŠ

Reflecting on Being a Newspaper Photographer (Or a Photographer Who Works for a Newspaper)
By Kim Komenich
©2008 Kim Komenich
The Lee Friedlander retrospective just ended here in San Francisco and in getting the opportunity to see his work as a collection of fifty years worth of projects ---some sequential, some ongoing-- I walked away with a sense of a photographer's life well-lived.

The Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp is sponsored by Nikon. Also supporting the workshop are Dyna-Lite. Think Tank Photo and Samy's Camera.

Boot Campers will cover the opening day of a college soccer tournament at Cal State Fullerton in the afternoon and in the evening, for those that want to shoot some football, we will lead a group to the Santa Ana Bowl for the Santa Ana College vs. Cypress College game. Because we will be shooting soccer, we will have a remotes class at the stadium prior to the start of the first game. The evening will be one-on-one editing and critique sessions with the workshop faculty and the best work from each participant will be shown and awards given out for the top photographs.

Day 2 on Saturday, September 6 will be a daylong lighting workshop/shoot out. Participants will break in small groups of 6 - 8 and groups will rotate through different portrait scenarios. Athletes and models will be at different locations for the participants to pose and light under the guidance of the Boot Camp faculty. Lighting equipment from speedlites to studio strobes will be used to make portraits in the various set ups. The evening will be one-on-one editing and critiques with the workshop faculty and the best work from each participant will be shown and awards given out for the top photographs.
