A blade server is a chassis housing that contains multiple modular circuit boards (the blades), each of which contain processors, memory, storage, and network connections. Virtualization is a software offering that allows one machine to run multiple operating systems and "devices". These two (somewhat) recent technological developments seem to be capable of delivering the things enterprises are increasingly in need of: small footprint with multiple processing engines and loads of computing power. With the adoption of Linux, Unix, Windows (in its many flavors) and Mac OS X, the smart enterprise needs to be able to serve the needs of users running all of these environments, as well as multiple server environments. Utilizing the physical resources of blades with the power of virtualization, it is now possible to have a single, small-footprint machine running all necessary environments
and operating systems -- without breaking the bank or crowding the data center.
