SCANNING THE FRONT TABLES
PATRIOT PIRATES
by Robert H. Patton
(Pantheon, hd. 26.00)
Aaargh. Another pirate book! But avast, mateys! Did you know that there were good pirates? They're called "privateers," and although they might have raided and plundered and harassed and murdered just like the regular old variety, they did so in the name of American independence and were instrumental in weakening British naval forces and winning the Revolution. Encouraged by our forefathers like Adams, Jefferson, Franklin and Washington, privateers amassed fortunes for families that still exist: Livingston, Bingham and Peabody, to name a few. Patton (grandson of the Patton) brings their risky and glorious exploits to life and describes the dark enterprises they turned to after the war. LH BUY NOW!
 LIBERTY'S BLUEPRINT
by Michael I. Meyerson
(Basic Books, hd. 26.95)
Aside from the Constitution itself, there is no more important document in American politics and law than The Federalist--the
series of essays written by Alexander Hamilton and James Madison to
explain the proposed Constitution to the American people and persuade
them to ratify it. Today, amid angry debate over what the Constitution
means and the framers' "original intent," The Federalist
is more important than ever. Liberty's Blueprint provides a
fascinating window into the fleeting, and ultimately doomed, friendship
between Hamilton and Madison, as well as a much-needed introduction to
understanding how the lessons of The Federalist are relevant
for resolving contemporary constitutional issues from medical marijuana
to the war on terrorism. BUY NOW!

INDIE BOUND PICK
 ALL THE WAY HOME
by David Giffels
(William Morrow, hd. 25.95)
Finding the perfect house is never easy. Rebuilding one from a crumbling pile--to say nothing of making it into a home--is even harder. All the Way Home follows Giffels's funny,
poignant, and confounding journey as he and his wife and a colorful
collection of helpers turn a money pit into a house that will complete
their family. Nothing could prepare them for a home restoration epic
that includes evicting squatters (both four- and two-legged), battling
an invading wisteria vine, hunting a ghost, and discovering thousands
of dollars in hidden Depression-era cash. But the story's heart lies
deeper, in an unexpected series of personal hardships that call into
question what "home" really means. Written with the humor and insight of Bill Bryson and John Grogan, All the Way Home is the engaging tale of a young father's struggle to restore a house and find his way . . . without losing himself. BUY NOW!
