Q. How can I use the command line to
move the Flexible Single Master Operations (FSMO) roles in Windows
Server 2008?
by John Savill
A. The process of using the command-line utility
Ntdsutil to move the FSMO roles is essentially the same as with previous
versions of Windows Server. However, before you can issue commands, you
must ensure that you’ve activated the Active Directory Domain Services
(ADDS) instance within Ntdsutil. Also, note that the Domain Naming
Master FSMO role is now just Naming Master. Following is a sample FSMO
move of all five roles, using Ntdsutil.
ntdsutil: activate instance ntds
Active instance set to "ntds".
ntdsutil: roles
fsmo maintenance: connections
server connections: connect to server savtstrwdc01
Binding to savtstrwdc01 ...
Connected to savtstrwdc01 using credentials of locally logged on
user.
server connections: quit
fsmo maintenance: transfer naming master
Server "savtstrwdc01" knows about 5 roles
Schema - CN=NTDS
Settings,CN=SAVTSTDC01,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN
=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=savdemo,DC=local
Naming Master - CN=NTDS
Settings,CN=SAVTSTRWDC01,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Sit
e-Name,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=savdemo,DC=local
PDC - CN=NTDS
Settings,CN=SAVTSTDC01,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN=Si
tes,CN=Configuration,DC=savdemo,DC=local
RID - CN=NTDS
Settings,CN=SAVTSTDC01,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site-Name,CN=Si
tes,CN=Configuration,DC=savdemo,DC=local
Infrastructure - CN=NTDS
Settings,CN=SAVTSTDC01,CN=Servers,CN=Default-First-Site
-Name,CN=Sites,CN=Configuration,DC=savdemo,DC=local
The following code moves the remaining four roles, without all the
typical output of running the commands.
fsmo maintenance: transfer infrastructure master
fsmo maintenance: transfer schema master
fsmo maintenance: transfer rid master
fsmo maintenance: transfer pdc
Q. How do I configure Windows Server
2008's Windows Explorer so that it displays thumbnails of
files?
by John Savill
A. By default, Server 2008 is configured to not use the
system resources necessary to generate thumbnails of files, so it always
displays the default icon associated with the file type. You can modify
this behavior on the View tab of the Folder Options dialog box (accessed
via Control Panel’s Folder Options applet or Windows Explorer’s
Tools, Folder Options menu item). Clear the "Always show icons, never
thumbnails" check box, and click OK. Thumbnails of file content will now
be displayed instead of the file’s icon.
Q. How do I enable Windows Search in
Windows Server 2008?
by John Savill
A. In Server 2008, the Search service is a role service
within the File Servers role. To enable the service, use the Server
Manager’s Add Roles Wizard and enable the Windows Search Service role
service. When the role service is enabled, the system prompts you for
the volumes for which the search should be enabled. You shouldn’t
enable search for the system volume because of performance implications.
Instead, enable it for volumes that contain the data you want to search.
After you make you selections, click Next, then Install to install the
Windows Search service.
The version of Windows Search included in Server 2008 is version 3.0.
Microsoft is now making Windows Search 4.0 available as an update
through Microsoft Update if the Windows Search role service is
installed.
Q. Where can I obtain Windows Search
4.0?
by John Savill
A. You can download Windows Search 4.0 from Microsoft's
"Description of Windows Search 4.0 and the Multilingual User Interface
Pack for Windows Search 4.0" page (support.microsoft.com/kb/940157).
Primary updates between version 3.0 and version 4.0 include improved
indexing performance, support for indexing encrypted documents on local
file systems, improved indexing of mailboxes at the client and server,
Group Policy settings that allow additional search dialogs on the user
side to search enterprise resources, control of indexing paths and
throttling settings, and multilingual capabilities through a
Multilingual User Interface Pack.
Documentation about Windows Search 4.0 is available as follows: The
Windows Search 4.0 Administrator's Guide is at

Q. How can I install Windows Live
Messenger on 64-bit Windows Server 2008 and 64-bit Windows
XP?
by John Savill
A. The latest versions of Windows Live Messenger consist
of a very small initial installer, which performs checks on the system
and determines whether the system meets requirements. Then, the
installer downloads the full Windows Live Messenger installation MSI
file and proceeds with the installation automatically.
The initial installer won’t install on Server 2008, even though
Windows Live Messenger itself runs fine on Server 2008. To install it,
you need to bypass the initial installer that performs the OS check and
directly install the MSI file. There are numerous methods to obtain the
Live Messenger installer. First, you can go to a site such as
www.softpedia.com and search for Install_WLMessenger.msi or Windows Live
Messenger. Second, on a Windows Vista machine, you can perform an
installation of Windows Live Messenger, then go into Windows Explorer
and remove the option to hide protected OS files. Browse to C:\Program
Files\Common Files\WindowsLiveInstaller\MsiSources, and copy the MSI
file to your Server 2008 machine. The latter is the safest option
because you know the source of the files you’re using.

DR for VMware® Virtual Infrastructure 3 (VI3) requires that all your
virtual machines (VMs) be regularly replicated to a remote site, which
consumes significant storage and network bandwidth. Read this white
paper to learn how to substantially reduce the amount of data in your
primary storage environment, which will result in a cascading benefit to
your downstream infrastructure, reducing the bandwidth necessary for
replication and the amount of storage needed at the DR site. www.windowsitpro.com/Whitepapers/Index.cfm?fuseaction=ShowWP&WPID=1d4ee7d9-9181-44a3-be44-df688e6a9980&code=062508
