AmbulanceHospital Implements High-Tech Emergency Response System

"The Advanced Emergency Geographical Information Systems (AEGIS) at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, Calif. is a Web-based hospital situational awareness system that monitors and maps the location and status of emergency resources, including area hospitals, ambulances and rescue helicopters. The rollout by Loma Linda University Medical Center has been several years in the making with the help of funding from a U.S. Department of Defense telemedicine grant and technology from GIS vendor ESRI." InformationWeek's Marianne Kolbasuk McGee provides a status report and a look ahead.

BuildingsGoogle and Microsoft Want Your Stuff

In recent hours both companies have opened up new ways for people and organizations to share their geographic data and knowledge in Google Maps and Microsoft Virtual Earth. Google launched MapMaker to help fill in data gaps in specific countries. Microsoft is encouraging localities to share their newer or higher resolution images. Should you participate? Consider the reaction in the geocommunity, which suggests caution.

The United for Africa website "looks to empower each one of us to make a difference, both in terms of keeping each other informed and providing assistance to those who are being persecuted." Members of the public are invited to enter incidents of abuse they have witnessed, in order to "force local and international governments to be frank, honest and responsive to this situation."
