Tonight On The CBS Evening News

Here's an early look at what we are working on for tonight's broadcast of THE CBS EVENING NEWS from Anchor and Managing Editor Katie Couric:

Hi everyone,

For the first time in U.S. history, the Supreme Court made a major ruling on individuals' rights to own guns. Today's landmark decision struck down Washington, D.C.'s decades-old ban on handguns, saying it doesn't follow the Constitution's Second Amendment. Wyatt Andrews will explain the historic case.

What affect will the ruling have on other firearms laws around America? Bill Whitaker will show us the areas of the country where this decision is already sparking debates - and could spur real change.

Also today, President Bush lifted trade sanctions against North Korea, a country he once called part of the "axis of evil." He also moved to remove it from the terror blacklist - if the country releases nuclear secrets. Lara Logan has the inside story.

Here at home, could you imagine paying $7 a gallon at the pump? A new report foresees just that - within the next two-to-five years. What would that mean for the way we live? Priya David examines this possibility for our special series, "Changing Times."

Next: Is your doctor prescribing under the influence? When your physician is being funded by a drug company, are you and your family safe? Wyatt Andrews has the report.

Finally tonight, a small step for NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander revealed what could be a BIG discovery for mankind. The intriguing news has a lot of people talking … and we'll tell you about it tonight.

Join us for all this and more!

Katie

Returning home from a family dinner, Kent and Tricia Whitaker and their sons Bart and Kevin were gunned down. Each was shot as they entered their home. Tricia and younger son Kevin were shot fatally, while Kent and older son Bart recovered from their wounds. The tragedy shocked Sugar Land. Who would harm this loving family? Police discovered that the attacker had used the Whitaker’s own gun. It was clear that this was not a random act of violence: Tricia and Kevin had been assassinated.
