Friend of Theodore Payne, SUMMER HOURS: JULY 1 - OCTOBER 14, TPF IS OPEN ONLY THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. July 12, Smart Irrigation for California Native Plants, with Bob Galbreath, who devised irrigation systems for the City of Santa Monica. For more info, see below. July 19, The TPF Skinny on Seeds. Want to do your part to mitigate against native plant die-back in California due to shifting climate patterns? Learn how to collect and store seed from the incomparable Kathy Parenteau. Put the seed in a time capsule for your young friends and grandchildren. (Honestly, I'm not trying to be depressing.) Please see below. July 26, DON'T MISS OUT!!! Find out how entertaining "Cacti, Agaves, and Yuccas of California and Nevada" can be! This is the first book of its kind in years -- YEARS! Be here for a ridiculously inexpensive illustrated lecture by Stephen Ingram, the author, followed by a book signing. More info below. July 26, Kill Your Lawn, with Steve Gerischer. Be pro-active and get ready for fall planting with something that can take the heat but that doesn't take a lot of water. More death-to-non-native-lawns info below.
Put someone else's years of experience to work for you: Enroll in this fundamental and essential class on basic drip and overhead (micro-spray) irrigation with Bob Galbreath, a certified irrigation designer and Water Resources Specialist (recently retired) for the Environmental Programs Division for the City of Santa Monica. Not many spaces left, SO GIVE US A CALL TO SIGN UP! Fee: $20 members. $30 non-members.
July 19, from 10 - noon, The TPF Skinny on Seeds, with Kathy Parenteau, Seed Room Supervisor. All summer long, Kathy is busy with seeds -- their collection, processing, storage and documentation. In this class, you'll venture out over the TPF grounds with Kathy to collect whatever seeds are in season, and then return to the Seed Room to learn about the next stages of the process through hands-on experience. Kathy has a wealth of stories and information to share about her sojourns with seeds. And don't forget -- seeds make a fine "green" gift ! Fee: $20 members. $30 non-members. Fee: $35 members. $45 non-members.
CHEAP ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE RECESSION (aside from the kinds of entertainment that are free . . . ) HERE IT IS, the informative and off-beat illustrated lecture on "Cacti, Agaves, and Yuccas of California and Nevada." This is something you don't normally see on our roster, and here's why: a compendium of this kind of information doesn't happen very often. So partake of an illustrated lecture and booksigning by botanist, writer and photographer Stephen Ingram, on JULY 26 at 10 a.m. His book features more than 60 species with detailed text and 262 color photos, watercolors and range maps. More than a field guide, this beautiful book examines the natural history, origins, ecology and conservation plus practical horticultural advice for cultivation of these succulents. This book has it all -- great reference material and exquisite photographs. Meet the author and hear about this splendid product of more than 30,000 miles logged on back roads! Fee: $10 members, $15 non-members.
Learn a multitude of ways to kill your lawn and weeds more effectively than by simply turning off your sprinklers. Steve will give you all the facts you need to liberate yourself and your yard from the enslaving needs of your lawn. Free your soil for flowers, shrubs and trees or, for those afficionados of Zen gardens, the simple beauty of raked pebbles. Fee: $20 members. $30 non-members.
