Dear Musician,

We're hearing a lot about energy prices these days, and the cost of filling our gas tanks affects us as musicians. Bands feel it's getting prohibitively expensive to carry around semis full of gear, concert promoters say people aren't willing to drive long distances to concerts, companies have cut way back on offering clinics because of rising airline costs, and quite a few people decided not to go to Summer NAMM because they used to drive there. Gas prices took that option out of the equation.

At Harmony Central, we're aware of these issues and are looking into ways to bring to the community experiences that have a beneficial impact on the environment. Take seminars: We are working on the best ways to present seminars and clinics online, saving thousands of miles of air travel, while providing a more convenient experience to those who want to attend - if they miss it, they can stream or download the video later. Companies will be able to offer more seminars, because production costs for generating an online seminar are much less than for sponsoring a "seminar tour."

As internet technology becomes more sophisticated, there's even the possibility of creating complete online trade shows at Harmony Central with chat rooms, product demonstration videos, audio examples, links to related products, and much more - with the added advantage of no convention hall food and the ability to be truly international, since anyone with a broadband connection would be able to participate.

Sure, we're all about gear and music. But we're also aware of what else is going on in the world, and we're always seeking ways to become not just a better website, but better contributors to society as well.

Hot Tip!

Silence Is Golden—or Silver or Bronze

Extension Cords

Whenever you’re recording in a situation where there’s an open mic, particularly if the space has any ambient quality (meaning, it’s not completely dead), be sure to record some stretches of silence during the downtime. Acoustic silence is different from sonic silence, and every room has its sound, even when there’s no one (or no instrument) making sound. Clips of your environment’s particular brand of silence can help to put a later, overdubbed part “in the room,” particularly if that part is exposed or added on to the front or back end of the recording. Audio silence is a good way to bridge two exposed parts that may have had their entrances or exits too tightly cropped. And in video situations, overdubbed, looped ambient silence can aid a slow fade to black by masking unwanted audio coming from the video track.
