Misuse and Abuse of Prescription Drugs:
A Growing and Concerning Trend

Come join us for a great new "Hot Topic" presented by Dr. Alan P. Agins, Ph.D., Adjunct Associate Professor Brown Medical School.

Dr. Agins will provide a candid look into the substantial and growing rise of the abuse of prescription and OTC medications in this country. In fact, the prevalence of prescription drug abuse is increasing at a pace even faster than the increase in medical use of prescription drugs. In this session we will explore the trends and demographics of prescription (and OTC) drug misuse, the neurobiological mechanisms leading to misuse, abuse and addiction, the basic pharmacology of the most widely abused classes of drugs, including the acute and long-term adverse effects and potential for deadly interactions.

Highlights:
  • Define the terms prescription drug misuse, drug abuse and drug addiction.
  • List the three classes of prescription drugs and one OTC medications that are most widely misused and/or abused.
  • State neurobiological and neurochemical factors that lead to drug abuse and addiction.
  • Recognize the potential for accidental overdoses or deadly interactions between prescription drugs of abuse and other medications.
  • Discuss several ways the pharmacist can help increase awareness of and reduce the potential for prescription drug misuse and/or abuse.
