Q. How do I remove a cached password
from a read-only domain controller (RODC)?
A. You can't. There's no way to directly remove a
password from an RODC. To achieve the same result, you can remove the
password from the RODC's cache, as follows. First, delete the user from
the list of users whose credentials the RODC is allowed to cache; then,
reset the password. At the next replication cycle, the RODC will see
that the user's password has changed and that it no longer has
permission to cache the user's credentials. The RODC will remove the
user's credentials from its cache.
Q. How do I enable remote management
of a Server Core installation?
A. Server Core installations have very few
local-management capabilities, except through the command line. To use
the remote-management graphical tools, you must enable the
remote-administration firewall exception by using the following
command:
netsh firewall set service type=remoteadmin mode=enable
Q. Why do I get a Virtual Disk Service
(VDS) error when I try to use the Microsoft Management Console (MMC)
Disk Management snap-in to remotely access a Server Core
installation?
A. You get the VDS error because, by default, the VDS
service isn't started on a Server Core installation. Use the following
code to make sure the service starts during boot-up.
sc config vds start= auto
net start vds
Then, use the following command to enable the remote-volume-management
firewall exception:
netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="Remote Volume Management" new
enable=yes
The output will be
Updated 3 rule(s).
Ok.
You'll stop receiving the VDS-related error, and you can use the Disk
Management MMC snap-in to remotely access the Server Core installation.
Q. How do I use the command line to
set the Windows Server 2008 product key for
activation?
A. Use the slmgr.vbs script and the -ipk switch to set
the Server 2008 product key for activation, as in the following example:
cscript slmgr.vbs -ipk "(product key)"
Q. How can I use the command line to
delete a Windows Server 2008 failover cluster?
A. Use the cluster.exe command to delete a Server 2008
failover cluster, and the /cleanup switch to delete any Active Directory
(AD) information. In the following example, I obtained a list of
existing clusters and deleted one of the listed clusters. Then, I
reopened the list to confirm that the deletion was successful.
To obtain a list of existing clusters, I used the command
cluster /list
The output was:
Cluster Name
---------------
SAVTSTCLUS01
SAVTSTFCLUS
Then, I destroyed the savtstfclus cluster by using the command
cluster savtstfclus /destroy /cleanup
The output was
Are you sure you want to destroy this cluster? (Y/N):
I typed Y and pressed Enter. The output was
Destroying cluster savtstfclus...
11% Moving resource group 'Cluster Group'.
22% Deleting resource group 'Available Storage'.
33% Cleaning up computer objects for cluster 'savtstfclus'.
44% Evicting node savtstfc02 from cluster.
55% Attempting to restore node savtstfc02 to its non-clustered state.
66% Taking resource group 'Cluster Group' offline.
77% Cleaning up resources in core Cluster groups.
88% Evicting node savtstfc01 from cluster.
100% Attempting to restore node savtstfc01 to its non-clustered state.
To reopen the cluster list, I used the command
cluster /list
The output was
Cluster Name
---------------
SAVTSTCLUS01
A cluster should be in a started state to destroy the cluster. If your
cluster nodes are in a state in which the cluster you want to delete
can't be started, use the /forcecleanup switch to force a
cluster-information cleanup, as in the following sample code:
"cluster node (node) /forcecleanup"

Delivering Reliable and Effective Web-Based Applications
Web-based services have become critical components of organizations'
line-of-business applications, and they need to be highly available to
prevent workflow disruption. To achieve that high availability, you need
to understand the operation of applications and be able to monitor the
components that make up your Web application infrastructure. Because
failing to meet service levels can have a company-wide impact,
implementing the tools and techniques that enable IT to live up to its
promises is a key requirement for delivering reliable and effective
Web-based services.
