FastCar Newsdesk for Infineon Raceway
by:  Doug Turnbull

Some long lasting sponsor-race team partnerships have yielded some of the most recognizable cars in NASCAR history; the #22 Caterpillar, Bill Davis Racing car is no exception. This partnership, however, will come to an end at the beginning of the 2009 season, as Richard Childress Racing officials announced Wednesday that Caterpillar is signing on with the #31 team and driver Jeff Burton.

NASCAR monitoring heat and carbon monoxide inside cars: The thermometer hovered at 102 degrees just prior to Friday's qualifying at Infineon Raceway, which means the temperature inside the Sprint Cup cars was much hotter. Not to worry. NASCAR is monitoring the situation. The governing body began last week at Michigan International Speedway monitoring the heat inside the new cars after several drivers complained that they were hotter than the old cars. They also began doing random tests for carbon monoxide to guarantee nobody was at risk. The findings were just what officials anticipated, that cars with proper ventilation, vents and insulation had no problem. For example, the temperature inside the car of Brian Vickers was 130 degrees, compared to 105 for another. "You start looking at the cars and say how can this be, they're all the same?" series director John Darby said. "Well, the 105 degree car didn't have a lot of vents and stuff in it, but they did take the time to insulate the floorboard and put insulation around the exhaust pipes. There's so many little things that make a difference that if you want to do them you can do them." Darby said none of the eight to 10 drivers tested for carbon monoxide at Michigan showed a dangerous level.(ESPN.com)(6-21-2008) Comment here

RCR close on fourth driver: Richard Childress said he has a short list of three to four drivers and that he should have an announcement by Aug. 15. He said the list includes drivers who are and are not in the Cup series but would not reveal any names. "We're very close," Childress said on Friday at Infineon Raceway. "We're just trying to find the right person that will be a good fit with General Mills." Sources close to the situation said Ryan Newman and Martin Truex Jr. are on the list but considered longshots. Dale Earnhardt Inc. has picked up the option for Truex next season. Unless he can get out of that he will return to the #1 car. Scott Wimmer is on the list, but considered on the lower end. Childress has hinted he may go with a younger driver with star potential. "He could be anywhere from 21 to 33 or 34," he said. Not on the list is Dave B***y, who hopes to re-sign with Bill Davis Racing next season. B***y's car is without sponsorship for 2009 after Caterpillar announced earlier this week it would sponsor Jeff Burton's car at RCR.(ESPN.com)(6-21-2008) Comment here

BDR to have new look for #22 in 2009 and a 2nd team: UPDATE: Bill Davis Racing (BDR) announced that Caterpillar, the team's sponsor for the past 10 seasons, will not return as primary sponsor of the #22 Bill Davis Racing team following the conclusion of the 2008 Sprint Cup Series season. "Caterpillar and Bill Davis Racing have enjoyed a long and successful partnership throughout the last 10 seasons, and we are proud of everything we've accomplished together, including wins in both the Daytona 500 and Southern 500," stated Team Owner Bill Davis. "This is an exciting time for our team, and we are looking forward to the future." The #22 Bill Davis Racing team continues to impress on the track, and the team remains in the 29th spot in the Sprint Cup Series Owners' point standings. The team, led by veteran crew chief Tommy Baldwin, picked up 10 championship point positions over the course of five events and has posted two top-10 finishes and six finishes of 22nd or better in the past eight races. An announcement regarding the second Bill Davis Racing car for 2009, the #23 Sprint Cup Toyota, will take place in the coming weeks.(BDR PR)(6-18-2008)
UPDATE: BDR's Chief Financial Officer Mike Brown told SPEEDtv.com on Friday that the team expects to have a replacement for Cat on Dave B***y's #22 next season and another new sponsor for the team's second car, which will carry #23 in 2009. No decision has been made on whether Jacques Villeneuve will return to the team or be replaced by another driver, Brown added. (SPEEDtv.com)(6-21-2008) Comment here
