ALAN HANSEN ON EURO 2008
Sometimes the group stages at football championships can be quite tedious and the tournament doesn't really start until the knockout stages, but we've had some unbelievably good matches already.

We've had great goals and the standard of play has been excellent at times - although the defending has been really poor.

But bad defending leads to plenty of excitement, so I'm not complaining.

The Netherlands have been the outstanding team so far. They tore France and Italy to shreds playing a brand of football that we haven't seen from them for a long, long time.

It was just great to sit and watch those matches. The pace of the play, and the standard of the play and the goals... we had everything in those two matches that you'd want from a football game.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been absolutely fantastic for them up front. He's been right at the hub and has linked everything together. We haven't seen him in action for a while since he left Manchester United for Real Madrid, but he's proved he's still a fantastic player.

Spain's strikeforce of David Villa and Fernando Torres have also impressed me, they look a tremendous partnership and it will be interesting to see how an Italian defence lacking its usual steel and solidity will cope.

I think Slaven Bilic has done an exceedingly good job with Croatia.

A sign of a great manager is the ability to utilise what you've got and I think he does that unbelievably well.

I think he's a great tactician and he gets the players playing for him. And they've had great support from their fans here in Austria.

At the start of the tournament Croatia were dangerous outsiders but I think they've got a chance of winning it.

Former Scotland defender Alan Hansen is part of Match of the Day's Euro 2008 team.
