LINUX MAINTAINERS WOO DEVICE DEVELOPERS
Linux's first-ever official "embedded maintainers" have invited device
developers to get involved in the kernel development process. Doing so
will pay dividends when it comes time to spin a product variant or
firmware update, say Paul Gortmaker and David Woodhouse, in a stereo
interview with Linux Weekly News.

WIND RIVER READIES VIRTUALIZATION STACK
Wind River will enter the virtualization software market, focusing on
networking, consumer electronics, and industrial automation, it said.
The company will in August begin beta-testing a hypervisor and tools
aimed at letting customers flexibly deploy Linux, VxWorks, and other
RTOSes symmetrically or asymmetrically on one or multiple physical
processor cores.

SCANNING CAMERA RUNS LINUX
LynuxWorks announced that its Linux distribution was used in a new
high-speed industrial camera system from Accu-Sort Systems. The
AccuVision 6010 Long-Range Camera System (AV-6010) is designed as a
line-camera scanning and sortation system for postal routing, warehouse,
and other distribution environments, says Accu-Sort.

MULTI-CORE NETWORKING SoCS TOUT LOW POWER CONSUMPTION
Freescale Semiconductor has announced a pin- and software-compatible
successor to its Linux-compatible PowerQUICC line of network processors.
Based on one to eight e500 cores clocked from 400MHz to 1.5GHz, the
power-efficient "QorIQ" processors will be fabricated with 45nm process
technology, and offer built-in support for virtualization.

ARM11 SOC GAINS DEV KIT
Freescale Semiconductor is shipping a product development kit (PDK) for
its ARM11-based i.MX31 system-on-chip (SoC). The kit includes a CPU
module, a "Personality" (peripherals) module, a debugging device, and
board support packages (BSPs) for either Linux or Windows CE..

LINUX TOP OS IN MIDS
Linux will be a top OS in MIDs (mobile Internet devices), suggests a
report from Forward Concepts. The report, aimed at quantifying
MID-related opportunities for chip makers, identifies TI and Qualcomm as
well-positioned in an emergent market expected to reach 40 million unit
shipments globally within four years.

MOZILLA PREVIEWS FIREFOX MOBILE
Mozilla Labs has posted a video preview, source code, and an online demo
of its forthcoming mobile web browser. Code-named "Fennec" for now,
Firefox Mobile features an innovative full-screen, finger-friendly
interface with iPhone-like "kinetic" scrolling, and a Mac-like "expose"
feature for tabs.

NEW SPEC DOES HD OVER EXISTING HOME WIRES
An emerging gigabit-speed, triple-wire technology called G.hn could ship
in 42 million units by 2013, says ABI Research. Under development by the
International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and promoted by a group
called the HomeGrid Alliance, G.hn is billed as an HD IPTV-capable
successor to current powerline networking standards.
