POST THOSE LISTS!
During the summer months, or any month for that matter, things can get a
little crazy with schedules. So keep a list posted to help you stay on
track. Buy some of the small pads of paper with magnets on the back (or
glue your own magnet to a pad). Then put them on the fridge (this also
works with writing boards that have magnets for the fridge). Have one
list of PHONE CALLS that need to be made. Have another list of ERRANDS
that need to be run. Finally have a SHOPPING LIST posted. Post all of
these lists and write things down as you think of them, attach a pen on a
string to the pad. Phone calls can often be made while you are
straightening up the kitchen. If someone is heading out for one errand,
they may be able to take care of another one, including shopping. POST
IT…on your fridge.

UTILITY LINE PAINT COLORS
If you, your neighbor, or city are going to be digging, then you’ll get
the early warning when a wide variety of colors show up on your lawn.
Here are the translations for most areas:
Red-Electric, Cables, Conduit & Lighting Cables
Yellow-Gas, Oil, Steam, Petroleum, Gases
Blue-Clean Water
Purple-Reclaimed Water, Irrigation, Slurry Lines
Green-Sewer and Drain Lines
Pink-Temporary Survey Markings
White-Proposed Excavation
Remember if you are the one doing the digging, in most locations, the line
is only a guideline and they have a buffer area on either side of the line
where you are NOT supposed to dig. POST IT…in the front of your phone
book.

ACID FREE MATTING
Some mats around works of art used to contain acid that could eventually
damage the art work. If you ever wondered if your mats were acid-free,
just look at their cut edges. Our local expert told us that if the edges
are white, then the mats are acid free. But if they become darker over
time, they are probably not acid free. If you want to protect your art
work, consider having it rematted. POST IT…with your art receipts.

HYPERMILING-SAVE ON GAS
With the price of gas a new group has emerged called Hypermilers. These
are people who do all they can to help their cars get BETTER gas mileage
than the manufacturers list as their average. To read more about tips

This will explain hypermiling, as well as direct you to articles for
beginners. There are also lots of other related articles. If the tips
involve any technical work, be sure to check with your mechanic. POST

RECIPE: MEXICAN RICE W/MEAT OR CHICKEN
Brown your choice of 1 lb of meat or chicken chunks, ground beef can also
be used. When browned, rinse under hot water to remove even more fat.
Add one 15 oz can of undrained diced tomatoes, one 15 oz can corn
undrained, one small can of diced green chili peppers undrained, 1C
chopped onions, and 3/4C water. (Optional: You can add a can of rinsed
black beans at this point if desired).Bring to a boil, then add 1 1/2C
instant rice (we find Uncle Ben’s to be moister and more to our liking).
Cover pan, remove from heat and let stand 5 min, then fluff with a fork,
add grated cheese on top if desired (Fat Free works well), and enjoy.
