Anti-Virus Is Dead: The Advent of the Graylist Approach to Computer
Protection
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3294080/158206237/100921/0/
This whitepaper, written by Hurwitz & Associates Partner Robin Bloor,
discusses how viruses, trojans, and other forms of malware persist only
because anti-virus, the main defense against them, is terribly flawed.
But now a far more effective technique is proliferating. Instead of
trying to recognize malicious software, application whitelists focus on
authenticating valid software. This approach enables whitelists to block
a far wider variety of malicious software than AV products could ever
hope to stop.

Changing IP addresses on Linux systems
By Sandra Henry-Stocker, ITworld
Changing the IP address on a Linux system involves both changing the IP
address using the ifconfig command and modifying the files that will
make your change permanent. The process is very similar to the process
you would follow on a Solaris system, except that a different set of
files must be modified. The proper steps to take also depend on the
particular Linux distribution you are using. Debian systems, for
example, use different files to store network configuration than do
RedHat systems.

Michigan-shaped meteorite disappoints at auction
http://cwflyris.computerworld.com/t/3294080/158206237/100834/0/
Michigan native Darryl Pitt thought he had a sure-fire moneymaker on his
hands: a meteorite shaped like Michigan's lower peninsula! Yet when he
auctioned off the curiously shaped space rock, it only netted $20,000,
not the $50,000 he expected. Were Wolverine State residents holding out
for one that featured the U.P. as well? Reflecting the rising power of
India in the global marketplace, a meteorite that resembled the Indian
subcontinent sold for $90,000.
