Boston Vetures-Petty investment leads to Petty cash; Labonte re-signed
A monumental moment in the history of NASCAR took place on Wednesday, as Richard and Kyle Petty announced that Boston Ventures, an investor in many enterprises, bought the majority share of Petty Enterprises. The company had been the family business since 1949 and this marks the first time that it had changed hands.

Steckly Continues Roll With Dickies 200 Pole

BOWMANVILLE, Ont.Scott Steckly (No. 22 Tow Truck in a Box/Erb Group Dodge) continued his recent dominance of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Sirius Satellite Radio by establishing a new track record and winning the pole for tomorrow’s Dickies 200 presented by Lucas Oil.

The Milverton, Ont., driver navigated the 2.459-mile road course at Mosport International Raceway in 85.375 seconds for an average speed of 103.688 mph. That bested the track record set a year ago by Andrew Ranger (No. 27 Wal-Mart/Tide Ford) by .061 seconds.

“We had a great car in practice. I can’t say that I was expecting a pole, but I knew we’d be up front once it was all done,” said Steckly.

The Canadian Tire Series has some excellent road racers with road courses making up nearly a third of the schedule, and Steckly normally is not mentioned in that handful of names, but he was not at all surprised with his performance.

“It’s great to go out and be faster than a bunch of those guys, but I’m not surprised. Like I said, without anything weird happening I knew we’d do well. Historically, this has been a pretty good track for us,” he stated.

Dating back to the final race of last season, Steckly has won the last two events and now has won his first career Canadian Tire Series pole.

Kerry Micks (No. 02 Beyond Digital Imaging Ford), who won two of the four road events in 2007, qualified for the outside pole with a time of 86.051 seconds (102.874 mph).  J.R. Fitzpatrick (No. 84 Fitzpatrick Motorsports Chevrolet) was just off his pace at 86.451 seconds (102.750 mph) and will start on the inside of row two for the Sunday afternoon race.

Peter Gibbons (No. 1 Canadian Tire/Mobil Super Ford) and reigning race and series champion Ranger rounded out the top five in qualifying.

Road-racing ace Robin Buck (No. 88 Active Green + Ross Ford) posted the third-fastest time in practice, but was forced to miss the qualifying sessions due to engine problems.

Kenny Forth qualified the No. 17 Castol/NPP Dodge of D.J. Kennington, who was at Kentucky Speedway for Saturday evening’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race. Kennington is expected to be at Mosport for the race tomorrow, but will start at the back of the field due to the driver change.

NASCAR Road Race Style rules were in effect for the two qualifying sessions. The 15 slowest cars, based on the practice times, went out as the first group. Drivers were permitted to run as many laps as they like in the allotted time period to post their quickest time, but were not permitted to stop and make adjustments. The 14 fastest cars followed with the same procedures. The times will be used to set the field for tomorrow’s running of the Dickies 200 presented by Lucas Oil with the green flag scheduled to wave at 1:30 p.m. ET.
