Every company knows it is crucial to care for the critical assets the company depends on, whether they include a fleet of trucks or a plant full of production equipment. To meet the specific needs of different asset types, organizations have traditionally relied on multiple software solutions. These solutions, however, provide only a partial view of an organization's total enterprise assets, making it difficult to identify areas for performance improvement. As a result, organizations don't have the asset visibility they need to achieve the operational excellence they seek.

More than just a buzzword, collaboration has become a key and much sought after competitive differentiator. Collaboration is especially valuable for large global corporations with offices that are dispersed throughout the world. Although these remote offices are part of the same company, geographic isolation creates silos of expertise that often go untapped, affecting competitive advantage. Whether external or internal, collaboration enables companies to extend the value of
their products or services to their customers and positively affects the top and bottom lines.

Traditionally, organizations used corporate firewalls and other intrusion detection systems to protect corporate networks from potentially compromised endpoints. In today's laptop-dominated environment, endpoint security strategies place the responsibility for security on the device itself. This next generation of security strategy is already common in the form of anti-spam filters, desktop level firewalls and anti-virus software programs.

IT departments must manage their hardware and software assets with the objective of providing efficient customer service to all constituents. Service provision requires that IT identify specific sets of services (such as in a service catalog), identify the assets required to deliver the services, authorize users to access the services, and establish processes and best practices for service delivery on an ongoing basis. One of the most critical areas that needs strong operational processes is managing changes to the IT infrastructure.

E-mail viruses are becoming increasingly more complex and faster spreading. Today, viruses spread in a matter of hours, often completely disrupting email service for corporations and creating an all-hands emergency situation for IT staff around the world. Traditional anti-virus defenses that rely solely on signature-based filters are no longer adequate. While these solutions are very accurate at detecting known viruses, they depend on receiving regular signature updates to protect against new threats. This makes them vulnerable to reaction times that can vary from hours to days. And during that "vulnerability window", a modern virus can propagate globally, bringing e-mail infrastructure to a halt.

Transaction-related content and documents, such as invoices, packing slips, and inventory reports, are at the heart of a company's operations, directly touching e-commerce, customer support, and back-office analytics and reporting. The demand for this information by an ever-growing number of users underscores its significance. Given the recent focus on business process improvement, access to and usability of this content should be re-assessed and optimized.
