Waaazzzzzuuup Shangers!

Now. It's recently come to my attention that my flagrant use of the term "Shangers" to refer to our beloved whore/pearl of the orient has ruffled a few feathers. It seems the term "Shangers" makes many cringe with disgust. I thought I was being affable, whimsical, sociable, and jovial, but recently, I've been notified that I'm in fact being "irritating," "juvenile," "sophomoric," and "infuriating."

So be it! I have no qualms about retiring the word "Shangers" from my vocabulary, relegating it to the dustbin with other outdated vernacular -- "No shit, Sherlock," "guy," "hella lame," "waaazup," and "solid" spring to mind -- but I need a replacement. I refuse to call Shanghai Shanghai. It's the only political issue I feel strongly about.

I'm sure many of you are like, "No shit, Sherlock. 'Shangers' is hella lame." Well FINE, guy. But do me a solid. Choose from this list of alternatives and email me back here. The one with most votes will become the new word for Shanghai and it is my pledge to you, guy, the voter, that I will drive that mother into the ground.

A) Shangblah
B) Shangsizzle
C) Shanghizzle
D) Shangdizzle
E) Shangde-oh-double-jizzle
F) (your suggestion here)

Vote early, vote often, as Al Capone once quipped.

Anyways, gossip: Toco Popo - a veritable institution in Shangblah -- is now closed. OMFG WEAK. They're still doing delivery but apparently Judy's co., which owns the place, is relaunching it as a Spanish restaurant. Also in that building, Studio 78 is reopening. I remember Studio 78 fondly because I somehow managed to get a VIP free drinks card for that bar. Attention to whoever is opening the place again: I am still accepting VIP cards.

I will also accept a VIP card for Guandii, which is also reopening - they had a party there last night. Do they have a swimming pool now? Is that a rumour? Did I start that rumour?

What else? Muse now owns Park 97, but are keeping it in the same format for now. What's with Muse huh? They've got like half of Shangsizzle these days. I wouldn't be surprised to wake up one morning and find that my bathroom has been turned into M9.

There's been some changes at the club you used to know as Volar as well. Volar has moved to the second floor exclusively (erstwhile the location of their VIP lounge) and the ground floor is now a club called "Block" or "Blok" or "Bloc" or something like that. So apparently they're two separate clubs with their own entrances.

Parties in Shanghizzle: the big DJ this weekend is Steve Lawler at Attica, and that's tonight. Also, Blame at Bonbon should be a good one, also tonight. For Saturday night I'm liking DJ Shiftee at Muse. He's a DMC champ and that's so hot in Shangdizzle right now. Antidote - with Sulumi and Bai fan - are at The Shelter on Saturday.

Live music? It begins and ends with the big S.T.D. one-year anniversary bash, and it looks like it's going to be huge. It's a two-day party, Friday night and Saturday night, and their hosting arguably the two best bands in China: New Pants (electro punk from Beijing) tonight, and Re-TROS (post punk from Beijing) tomorrow night. Supporting is the best of Shanghai's live acts - Banana Monkey and Cold Fairyland - and the whole thing goes down in some warehouse in the Moganshan Lu art district. They've also got booths and things set up for other diversions and whatever. So don't miss out on that one for sure. R3 is djing both nights, and word on the street is he's getting go go dancers. Hot damn.

You have yourself a good weekend, Shangde-oh-double-jizzle.

When I'm called off, I gotta sawed-off,

Joke of the week

A 90-year-old man said to his doctor, "I've never felt better. I have an 18-year old bride who is pregnant with my child. What do you think about that?"

The doctor considered his question for a minute and then said, "I have an elderly friend who is a hunter and never misses a season. One day when he was going out in a bit of a hurry, he accidentally picked up his umbrella instead of his gun. When he got to the Creek, he saw a rabbit sitting beside the stream. He raised his umbrella and went, 'bang, bang' and the rabbit fell dead. What do you think of that?"

The 90-year-old said, "I'd say somebody else killed that rabbit."

The doctor replied, "My point exactly."
