Seven
Questions about Contigo's New Mobile Items Monitoring
Patent
Ed. note: This article
originally appeared in LBS360.NET on June 4.
Contigo received a patent earlier
this year for monitoring the locations of mobile items. The patent is
not linked to a specific location technology, meaning it applies to
existing and perhaps future technologies. Editor-in-Chief Joe Francica
asked company representatives to share insights on the implications of
this patent for the company's existing fleet tracking and future
solutions.

Climate
Extremes and Society
Extreme climatic events present society with significant challenges in
a rapidly warming world. Ordinary citizens, the insurance industry and
governments are concerned about the apparent increase in the frequency
of weather and climate events causing extreme, and in some instances,
catastrophic, impacts. Climate Extremes and Society focuses on
the recent and potential future consequences of weather and climate
extremes for different socioeconomic sectors. The book also examines
actions that may enable society to better respond to climate
variability. It provides examples of the impact of climate and weather
extremes on society. How have these extremes varied in the past, and
how might they change in the future? What type of efforts will help
society adapt to potential future changes in climate and weather
extremes? The book is designed for all policy-makers, engineers and
scientists who have an interest in the effects of climate extremes on
society. From Cambridge University Press, 2008.
Geographic
Visualization: Concepts, Tools and Applications
Geographic Visualization: Concepts, Tools and Applications
is a 'state-of-the-art' review of the latest developments in the
subject. It examines how new concepts, methods and tools can be
creatively applied to solve problems relevant to a wide range of
topics. The text covers the impact of three-dimensional displays on
user interaction along with the potentialities in animation and
clearly
explains how to create temporally sensitive visualizations. It also
explores the potential for handling mobile data and representing
uncertainty; as well as the role of participatory visualization
systems
and exploratory methods. From Wiley, 2008.
Snow
and Climate: Physical Processes, Surface Energy Exchange and
Modeling
The extent and variability of seasonal snow cover are important
parameters in the climate system, due to their effects on energy and
moisture budgets, and because surface temperature is highly dependent
on snow cover. In turn, snow cover trends serve as key indicators of
climate change. In the last two decades, many new techniques have
become available to study snow-climate relationships. Satellites
provided the first capability for monitoring snow cover extent at
continental and hemispheric scales, and there have been rapid advances
in snow modeling physics to represent snow cover and snow processes in
Global Climate Models (GCMs). These advances have changed the way we
look at snow cover. The main goal of this book is to provide an
up-to-date synthesis of the current state of snow-climate science that
reflects this new perspective. From Cambridge University Press,
2008.
