Don't Quit Your Day Job!

Hi Raquelle,

If your “day job” is your dream job, then don’t quit. But what if it isn’t? Do you know what your “dream job” would be?

Thoreau said that most men are slaves to their work and enslaved to those for whom they work. He concluded that “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.”

The good news is, it doesn’t have to be that way! Within each of us is a God-given creativity of some type that deserves an outlet. It may not be a source of income, but it can be a great source of satisfaction.

This week’s featured film The List is based on a book by Robert Whitlow. A successful attorney, he was happy in his work and had no plan to become a filmmaker. One day, he acted upon an idea and wrote a novel. Published ten years ago, it was made into a movie last year and is being released on DVD this week.

In an exclusive interview with ChristianCinema.com, Robert tells us that he still works his day job because he really enjoys practicing law. He also continues to write best-selling books in his spare time.

What are you doing in your spare time? Maybe you’re the next best-selling author or blockbuster filmmaker. Or perhaps you are your children’s favorite story-teller. Be creative. And, if necessary, quit your day job.

From the screening room,

Angela Walker

Power comes with a price

Deception, greed, and a deadly lust for power lie at the heart of a sinister organization in this intriguing thriller based on the novel by best-selling author Robert Whitlow. Starring Malcolm McDowell (TV's War And Peace), Chuck Carrington (TV's JAG), Hilarie Burton (TV's One Tree Hill) and Will Patton (A Mighty Heart), The List is a heart-racing tale of suspense and betrayal, in a dark world of blood oaths that bind generations.

Returning home for his father's funeral, Renny Jacobson (Carrington) discovers he's the inheritor of his family's chair in a secret society founded during the Civil War. He suspects there's more to the society's activities than meets the eye, and tries to discover the group's true nature. Its corrupt leader (McDowell), targets Renny, exposing him to a dark and mysterious force with the power to destroy everything - and everyone - he loves.

Industry Interview
Christians in Cinema: Gary Wheeler
by Angela Walker

North Carolina native Gary Wheeler (seen at left with actor Malcolm McDowell) is introducing the world to his beautiful state one movie at a time. Soft-spoken, with the genteel manner of a true Southern gentleman, Gary’s choice of location for his new film The List made it possible for him to go home to his family every night.

Based on a novel by Robert Whitlow, the film is the story of a young attorney fresh out of law school that learns about the power of prevailing prayer.

CC.com: How did you meet Robert Whitlow?

Gary: I was producer on a film called Final Solution that was filmed in South Africa. A gentleman in Charlotte saw it at some sort of film night and really liked it. He was friends with Robert Whitlow, who had written this book The List. At that point, I think he had 4 novels written.

One day this gentleman called me and told me he had a friend named Robert Whitlow who was looking for someone to adapt his book into a movie. He’d been approached by many producers over the years, but he didn’t want to give up creative control.

Robert called me up, we talked, and he sent me the book, and I sent him a copy of “Final Solution.” I stepped out of my office and ran into a friend of mine in the hallway. I said, “Hey, have you ever heard of a guy named Robert Whitlow?” I knew this guy was a Christian, and he said, “Yeah, my son goes to his church in Charlotte. I’ve read all of his books.”

I read the book in basically two bursts. I read the first 100 pages over one or two days, and then it sat for a couple of weeks while I did something else. One night I couldn’t sleep, and I woke up at 3:00 AM in the morning and... [ Read more... ]

"Expelled" Allowed to Use Lennon's Song

by Tom Hays - Christian Post

Yoko Ono lost her legal bid Monday to stop the playing of a 15-second excerpt of John Lennon's song "Imagine" in a film challenging the theory of evolution. Lennon's widow had sued the makers of Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, saying they used the ex-Beatle's anthem without her permission. [ Read more... ]

"Sex and the City" Reflects a Culture in Ruins

by Marc T. Newman, Ph. D.

“Women have the right to behave every bit as badly as men” is not a claim made by the big-screen version of the television hit "Sex and the City" – it is the film’s presupposition. In the world of Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, and Charlotte, women are every bit as callous, petty, unforgiving, and sexually promiscuous as any man. It’s not an aberration, the film reveals, it’s just the way things are.  [ Read more... ]

Louie Giglio: Indescribable - DVD

Louie Giglio: Indescribable - DVD
by Daniel Eller

"This DVD was awesome! Louie had a way of making the "bigness" of God seem easier to imagine. His knowledge of the universe is amazing. We saw him do the same show when we saw Chris Tomlin in concert this last year and it was truly amazing. I recomment that every Christian who has a chance to view this DVD, make it happen. It is so well worth it."

Dove Review:

The List is a film about redemption. A group of men welcome aboard a new member, Renny, whose father was a member of the private group and "the list." There is a history and a mystery which surrounds the list and Renny slowly begins to unravel the mystery. There is an evil which he has to fight he never would have dreamed of. Renny learns his mother had prayed for him, and she believed her prayers would be answered after her death. Is there hope for Renny? Can he find happiness with a woman he meets named Jo? The film emphasizes what Renny's mother believed: that both the enemy of man and God's children make the mistake of underestimating the power of prayer. In one scene, the before and after pictures of hardened people who turned to God are shown and the contrast is striking in their appearances.

Although the film is a bit intense for young children, we gladly award our Dove "Family-Approved" Seal to this film. The prayers and scripture readings are handled in practical ways in the film and many people will appreciate the spiritual message of the film. Add The List to your list of must-see films!
