Oprah Winfrey decided to go vegan for 21 days for both ethical and health reasons and encouraged others to join her. Her announcement created a massive media buzz, raising awareness about the benefits of veganism to millions. She maintains a daily blog of her diet, commenting on delicious vegan food and providing recipes. According to the American Dietetic Association, 11 percent of girls ages 13 - 17 identify themselves as vegetarian or vegan - the fastest growing segment of the vegetarian population. That compares favorably with 7 percent of adult females who don't eat meat. Last month, the prestigious Pew Charitable Trusts and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health concluded that factory farming takes a big toll on human health and the environment, undermines rural economic stability, and fails to provide humane treatment of livestock. Capping a two-year study, with agriculture industry participation, the report calls for phase-out of all intensive confinement of farmed animals.

21st, ten Austrian animal rights activists were arrested and are being held without charges or evidence. Seven of
the activists, including President of the Austrian Association Against Animal Factories Professor Martin Balluch,
are on a prolonged hunger strike. 
FARM’s letter-writing campaign
