You might think it odd, but it's difficult to imagine summer in Italy without mixed boiled vegetables -- potatoes, beets, string beans, zucchini and so on -- served cold. Very refreshing, and they're excellent on picnics too.

Timballo di Melanzane e Spaghetti
A timballo is a pasta pie, and this particular one brings to mind Sicily because of the eggplant (which is used to make the "crust"), at least to me. It will also be quite nice at a picnic or barbecue, but is certainly elegant enough for a more formal meal indoors as well.

Some cookbook recipes transform this quick, easy tomatoey way to use up stale bread in summer into a hearty winter soup. Nothing could be further from true Pappa al Pomodoro, which you should make a lot of, because everyone will want more.

Coleen, our Cocktails Guide, on something I no longer drink at all -- shots aren't an Italian thing, and while our town bar makes espresso coffee it doesn't serve shots -- but that I remember with fondness. Good advice, too.

Codacons is one of the major Italian consumer and environmental protection groups, and is active in all sorts of things, from working with people who were sucked into shady investment schemes to promoting healthy foods. There's a lot here and it gives a different picture of Italy.
3) More Italian: Wanna Marchi
Wanna Marchi and her daughter Stefania ran a late-night/local TV scam for years, claiming they could remove the Evil eye and more. They'd probably still be at it, bilking people of thousands, had a a satirical prime time newscast not put them into the limelight in such a way that the police had to act.
