NEW ATOM MODELS TARGET LOW-COST PCS
Intel has announced a second wave of Atom processors, targeting simple
desktops and notebooks the chipmaker dubs "nettops" and "netbooks." The
Atom N270 and 230 processors are accompanied to market by matching
945GSE and 945GC chipsets and low cost SSDs (solid state drives).

NVIDIA COUNTERS INTEL'S ATOM WITH ARM11-BASED SOCS
Nvidia has added to its family of ARM11-based SoCs for mobile Internet
devices (MIDs). The Tegra 600 and 650 boast IDE interfaces, HD video
encoding/decoding, dual independent displays, support for 12-megapixel
cameras, and 10 times better power efficiency than x86-based
alternatives, Nvidia suggests.

MICROSOFT AIMS XP AT "NETTOPS"
While the new N270 and 230 Atom processors might be designed to run
Windows Vista, devices based on them will also be available with Windows
XP. Microsoft today announced plans to keep selling XP to computing
device manufacturers making low-cost desktop computers, or "nettops," as
Intel calls them.

NETBOOK BOASTS OVERCLOCKABLE ATOM
MSI has announced a low-cost "netbook" based on Intel's N270 Atom
processor. The "Wind NB U100" includes a 10-inch display, 80GB hard
drive, 1GB of RAM, webcam, five-hour battery life, 802.11b/g and
Bluetooth wireless, and can be overclocked to 1.9GHz.

"NETBOOK" USES INTEL'S ATOM N270
Acer has announced a low-cost notebook, aka "netbook," based on Intel's
newly unveiled N270 Atom processor. The Aspire One offers Windows XP
Home, 512MB or 1GB of RAM, 8GB flash, an 8.9-inch, 1024 x 600 display,
WiFi, a webcam, and an optional 80GB hard drive.

ASUS ATOM-IZES EEE PC
Asus announced two new versions of its Eee PC, both based on Intel Atom
processors. The Eee PC 901 and 1000 models provide 8.9-inch and 10-inch
displays, respectively, and add Bluetooth, longer battery life, improved
shock resistance, faster WiFi, more storage, and WiMAX options.

MICROSOFT PREVIEWS WINDOWS EMBEDDED STANDARD
Microsoft has released a downloadable beta version of its newly renamed
embedded operating system for x86-based devices. Formerly known as
Windows XP Embedded, Windows Embedded Standard combines Windows XP
codebase updates with new versions of Internet Explorer, RDP (remote
desktop protocol), Windows Media Player, and .NET.

MICROSOFT LINKS UP PHONES, PCS
Microsoft has announced software that brings support for Windows Vista's
"SideShow" technology to Windows Mobile-based phones. Via the "Windows
SideShow for Windows Mobile Developer Preview," Vista users can feed
content and small applications to their phones, or use their phone to
control their PCs.

HTC PHONE HAS SLIDE-OUT KEYBOARD AND TV OUTPUT
HTC has announced a Windows Mobile 6.1-based phone that features the
company's signature "TouchFLO 3D" user interface. The Touch Pro also
sports a 2.8-inch VGA-resolution touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard,
TV output, 3.2 megapixel camera, optional GPS, FM radio, and 4GB of storage.

WINDOWS CE TO SUPPORT 2GHZ ARM SOC
Marvell is sampling a new family of high-performance, ultra-low-power
system-on-chips (SoCs) targeting IP-based home gateways, set-top boxes
(STBs), home routers, media servers, and mobile Internet devices (MIDs).
The Windows CE-compatible Marvell 88F6000 chips integrate Feroceon cores
that clock to 2GHz, and draw 2 Watts.

CORTEX-A8 KIT TARGETS MEDICAL DEVICES
Logic has announced a system-on-module (SOM) and development baseboard
aimed at bringing ARM's newest Cortex-A8 architecture to medical
devices. Offering a choice of four Cortex-A8 processors, the 3 x 1.3
inch "OMAP35x SOM-LV" baseboard and "Zoom OMAP35x" dev kit support
Windows CE 6.0.

WINDOWS CE-BASED PMP RECOGNIZES HANDWRITING
iRiver says it is now shipping a PMP (personal media player) with a
4-inch, 800 x 480 touchscreen display and a 33MB 1.3-inch hard drive.
The Windows CE-based "P.ple P10" offers handwriting recognition, e-book
reading functionality, and an optional TV tuner.

RUGGED HANDHELD CAN BE DROPPED, DUNKED
Industrial Computing has added to its Guardian range of "military-grade"
PDAs that run Windows CE 5.0. The dust- and drop-proof Guardian Model
135 includes a 3.5-inch touchscreen display, WiFi, Bluetooth, an RS232
port, and both SD and PCMCIA expansion slots.

SELF-CHECKOUT DEVICE RUNS WEPOS
IBM has announced a kiosk intended to let consumers pay for their
purchases anywhere in a store. The "AnyPlace Checkout" kiosk, based on
Windows Embedded for Point of Service (WEPOS), targets either specialty,
drug or convenience stores, or departments within larger retailers.
