Getting into B-School: Your Advice!

From: Ani
To: ALL

Hello,

I want some insights from you. What can be your advice to someone who wish to change the career (from Public relation to business area) by using the B-School to fill the gap, because he doesn't have direct experience in the business area. I know that the B-Schools all require the experience before accepting any application. This is a big challenge! Could your experience help me to go further in my decision?

Hi Ani,

Many MBA students are career switches, and use the school's resources (courses, career services, alumni networks) to successfully transition into a new field. So the MBA makes a lot of sense for you.

Do you have a sense of what field you are interested in? Do you have previous work experience in public relations?

Regards,
NP

Hello,

Thank you. I have been doing the missionary work which I consider as related to RP area. Thus, I want use this to do consulting or strategic management. I want to use the HR as a base for a strategic area for the future. I speak French, English and Japanese...Right now I am trying to perfect my Spanish. So do I need to work first in a business area before applying to any MBA program? Or can apply right now. This is because my main studies are philosophy and theology. I mean, respectively my undergraduate and graduate degrees.

Thank you.

Hi Ani,

You can definitely applying to a top MBA program without a business background. Many students have non-business background prior to MBA (Engineering, Non-profit, Government, Creative).

The challenge for you will be your MBA-story. What are your post-MBA goals? If they are in the business area, why are you switching from the work you are doing right now to something business related. How will the MBA and your previous work experience allow you to be successful in your post-MBA career?

Ani - if you are seriously considering getting an MBA, I would strongly urge you to check out one of the MBA Admissions books. They are a great wealth of quick information on the MBA admissions process. There also have a description of schools/program which will help you identify which programs could better suit your background and/or career interests. For example, there are many schools which have a greater non-profit/development/social interest emphasis (Haas, Kellogg, GT... to name a few).

I am a HUGE fan of books by Montauk (How To Get Into A Top MBA Program) and Boukright (Your MBA Game Plan - full disclosure, this book is affilated with Veritas Prep)

Good luck!

Getting into B-School: Feedback Session?

From: dark_knight
To: All

Does Darden/Duke provide feedback on dinged applications?
------------
From: cjd9
To: dark_knight

From my experience last year Duke does provide feedback. It should say on the ding letter whether you are offered the chance to get feedback. The spots to get the feedback fill up extremely quickly though.

cjd9,

Thanks for the reply.

If indeed one does get a feedback session, apart from ''how can I improve my application for the next year' question, what else can one ask?

MBA Admissions
By Ahad Khan

Hi...

I am a prospective MBA student, with a GMAT score of 700/5.0. This year I have applied to number of colleges including Columbia, Wharton, INSEAD, etc. I did receive interview calls from couple of colleges but no good news yet. I plan to re-apply in the next academic year.

In order to have better understanding of where I need to improve and how I can make my application stronger, I would like to get in touch with DUBAI alumni's of Columbia, Wharton, Harvard, Chicago, and also applicants who have secured admission in the year 2008.

Thanks

 WORDS OF WISDOM
MBA grads offer advice on school and work
-------------------------------------------

I was told that you had to be president of practically every organization that was out there for the job interview process. Then I noticed that many of the less-involved students got just as good, if not better offers. The key to extracurriculars is to get involved in groups that you really care about (just two or three are really necessary). Extracurriculars are a great way to get to know your classmates and a good stress reliever, but don't overdo it. -Fuqua '98, Associate Brand Manager

First semester is the worst. I would recommend making as few extracurricular commitments as possible to get through that first core semester. After that, you know the ropes and the shortcuts. I chose to run the school paper starting second semester first year through the end of first semester second year. My spring was free to job hunt. -UT Austin '96, Circulation Business Manager

I had friends that immersed themselves in the business school experience. However by second year they were literally begging for people who had friends outside of business school to include them. I guess you can talk about Black and Scholes only so many times. -UCLA Anderson '97; Consultant
