  from Ann Pizer
Those who think yoga is all about twisting yourself up like a pretzel are surprised to discover another one yoga's many challenges- balancing postures. In addition to flexibility, balances also require strength and, well, a good sense of balance. Luckily, all these requirements can be attained through regular practice over time.

Standing Balances Sequence
Try to move through this sequence of six balancing postures without letting the lifted leg touch down the whole time.

Inversions
Balancing on the legs and arms is hard enough, but what about doing it all upside down? Inversions are often a question of mind over matter (meaning your mind doesn't want your feet to go over your head, even though it's technically possible.) The key to getting these postures is to practice at home, since you almost never get enough time to work them out in class.

Arm Balances
Arm balances are some of yoga's most spectacular poses, and some of the most fun. Strong arms and a strong core make these poses possible.

Pose of the Week - Pendant Pose - Lolasana
The key to this pose is being able to hold the legs in a lotus position. Having the legs all wrapped up and contained makes them much easier to lift than if they are dangling around in a half lotus. Although that ten-breath lift at the end of the Ashtanga primary series is still a killer, no matter what position your legs are in.
