  This Week In A.V. Madison

Text this event

In the Madison print edition of The Onion:

When the announcement for an event promises "lavish displays of Jell-O," who can help but save the shit out of that date? A recent art exhibition, HouseWork, turned a house on East Washington Avenue into a multi-artist conceptual meditation on domestic life.

Lisa Sikorski presented her red, pink, and green dessert-sculptures, "Confectionary #3," more as decorations than as edibles, a nearby label warning that what looks nice and shiny today will soon go bad. Nahyun Kim sat in a chair on the three-season porch, apparently trying to surround herself with red yarn. A video installation by Marina Kelly ran in an upstairs bathroom. Attendees helped themselves to cookies made solely from ingredients that Angela Richardson, Deb Shapiro, and Sikorski borrowed from their neighbors. In the backyard, Megan Katz painted sheets of newspaper white and hung them up on clotheslines, explaining, "I?m doing laundry." A few folks sat around a table and sipped tea from an heirloom tea set belonging to Nicole Gruter, who kept the conversation going with topics written on place cards (The A.V. Club drew "FEAR"). In a piece simply called "Sausage Party," Tyler Robbins served sausage off a nearby grill.

Got an event? Submit it to madcalendar@theonion.com no later than the Wednesday of the week before publication, and preferably two weeks or more in advance. Got a CD or anything else you'd like us to check out? Mail it to 551 W. Main St., #100, Madison, WI 53703

Sunday, June 1, 7:30pm   Buckethead + That 1 Guy At Barrymore Theatre

Buckethead

Barrymore

Text this event

For those who can't look past the bucket on his head, Brian "Buckethead" Carroll will remain a novelty. But over the past 20 years, the guitarist has redefined rock virtuosity with a body of work that spans from avant-garde to hair metal. Granted, it can be a highly annoying body of work?with past collaborators like John Zorn, Bill Laswell, Mike Patton, and Les Claypool, Buckethead's high-octane, high-concept noodling still sounds like, well noodling?but the guitarist's sheer talent and idiosyncratic style have vaulted him to the top of the ax-for-hire pantheon. Buckethead's biggest claim to infamy was playing in Guns N' Roses from 1998 to 2004, though he was famously turned down by Ozzy Osbourne because he wouldn't "get rid of the fucking bucket." Also playing: That 1 Guy.

Tuesday, June 10, 6pm   The A.V. Club's Area Band Tuesdays: Sleeping In The Aviary + Brown Derby At Memorial Union Terrace

Sleeping in the
Aviary

Brown Derby

WUD

Text this event

In this summer's Area Band Tuesdays series, The A.V. Club brings some of Madison's finest acts to the Terrace for a series of eight early-evening shows. Some bills will have an eye toward unusual pairings, including our kickoff with the unpredictable Sleeping In The Aviary and young honky-tonkers Brown Derby. SITA may have debuted with an album of wiry, catchy punk tunes (2007's Oh, This Old Thing?), but judging by recent live sets, that doesn't necessarily indicate what'll happen on a new disc it's in the process of mixing. Shows this year have included a Lee Hazelwood cover, musical saw, and a taste of folk- and country-inspired sounds, and releases from side projects Whatfor and She Is So Beautiful/She Is So Blonde veer into everything from vintage pop to lo-fi bedroom experiments. This will be the band's last show before singer-songwriter-guitarist Elliott Kozel moves to Minneapolis, but SITA plans to go on for the time being. Brown Derby isn't completely bound to one sound either, though its male-female vocals and twanging Telecaster nail down a vintage Bakersfield charm. Singer-songwriter John Kunert doesn't seem to have tired of that sound (or honky-tonk stage getups), but he's often said he wants to experiment a little more, and the band recently did some recording with former Son Volt member Dave Boquist on steel guitar and fiddle.

Other upcoming Area Band Tuesdays include: Those Poor Bastards and Zebras (6/17); The Arge (7/1); El Valiente and National Beekeepers Society (7/8); and His & Her Vanities and The Grizzlies (7/29).

Wednesday, June 11, 6-8pm   June Meeting Of The Onion League Of Literature And Libations: A Discussion Of A Clockwork Orange By Anthony Burgess

Literature and

Brocach

A Clockwork Orange

Text this event

Because only alcohol can save adult literacy, The Onion invites you to the June meeting of its monthly book club, the League of Literature and Libations. We'll convene upstairs at Brocach Irish Pub, and after a brief social hour, our moderator will lead a book discussion. Brocach will provide complimentary appetizers and drink specials for book club attendees.

Set in a dismal dystopia, Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange is the first-person account of a juvenile delinquent who undergoes state-sponsored psychological rehabilitation for his aberrant behavior. The novel satirizes extreme political systems that are based on opposing models of the perfectibility or incorrigibility of humanity. Written in a futuristic slang vocabulary invented by Burgess, in part by adaptation of Russian words, it was his most original and best-known work. Alex, the protagonist, has a passion for classical music and is a member of a vicious teenage gang that commits random acts of brutality. Captured and imprisoned, he is transformed through behavioral conditioning into a model citizen, but his taming also leaves him defenseless. Burgess' 1963 novel stands as a classic of twentieth century post-industrial alienation, often shocking us into a thoughtful exploration of the meaning of free will and the conflict between good and evil.

The meeting will be open to all, but to RSVP and receive a few questions to guide your reading, send an email to litandlibations@theonion.com.

For July's meeting (to be held on 7/9), we'll be reading The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano.

Thursday, May 29, 8pm   Win Tickets To Joel Paterson's CD Release Party At High Noon Saloon

Joel
Paterson

High Noon

Text this event

Pedal- and lap-steel guitar is among the most fluid and flexible of instruments, or at least guitarist Joel Paterson makes them sound that way on Steel Is Real, a new instrumental CD released here. With delicate vibrato and easygoing pluck, the Madison native and current Chicagoan leads his trio into ragtime, western swing, country, and of course a bit of Hawaiian music. Paterson doesn't seem interested in making a radical departure from any of these Americana reference points, whether writing his own tunes or covering Cole Porter or Django Reinhardt (or playing in one of his other bands, Devil In A Woodpile). Luckily, he's got a natural feel for their charms, and shows it with consummate class.

For a chance to win a pair of tickets, send an email to madpromo@theonion.com and put "Joel Paterson" in the subject line.

Friday, May 30, 9pm   Win Tickets To French Kicks + Frightened Rabbit At High Noon Saloon

French Kicks

Frightened Rabbit

High Noon

Text this event

Crafting rough-hewn janglers that imbue its plaintive kitchen-sink lyrics with a charming immediacy, Glaswegian trio Frightened Rabbit doesn't strive for stardom. The band's members go only by their first names, and are often photographed in masks or sleeping face down. Such coyness can be off-putting, but not when it's channeled into songs as endearing on those on the band's recent second album, The Midnight Organ Fight. New York's French Kicks headline. Also playing: Brighton, MA, One For The Team.

Monday, June 2, 8pm   Win Tickets To Nels Cline Singers + Painted Saints At High Noon Saloon

Nels Cline

High Noon

Text this event

Much has been made of Wilco's experimental tendencies over its past few albums, but in reality, those sounds aren't much more than window dressing for (admittedly fantastic) alt-country-ish pop. For current Wilco guitarist Nels Cline, though, experimentation is an end in itself. A former member of The Geraldine Fibbers and founder of numerous collaborative projects, including his ironically named instrumental combo The Nels Cline Singers, Cline has brought his edgy, dynamic style to over 100 albums, including those by the likes of Thurston Moore, Lydia Lunch, and Mike Watt. Pick up this week's issue of the The A.V. Club to read an interview with Paul Fonfara, who masterminds Minneapolis-based openers Painted Saints' cryptic brew of Balkan and spaghetti-western experimentalism.

For a chance to win a pair of tickets, send an email to madpromo@theonion.com and put "Nels Cline" in the subject line.
