BEA E-mail Alert

May 2008

Dear BEA attendees,

Please see below the announcement regarding an important PublicAffairs panel during BEA. Those of you who have been librarians for a while will remember Rick Wartzman's very successful book, King of California. His new book, Obscene in the Extreme, tells the story of the banning and burning of Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath.

The panel will also feature Chris Finan, author of From the Palmer Raids to the Patriot Act, and Luis Rodriguez, author of Always Running: Gang Days in L.A.

I hope you'll share this invitation with your fellow librarians and we look forward to seeing you there.

Best,
Elenita Chmilowski
Director of Library Sales

The panel will be moderated by Nicholas Goldberg, Editor, Op-Ed and Sunday Opinion, The Los Angeles Times

Obscene in the Extreme: Why Books Still Get Banned
Obscene in the Extreme From the Palmer Raids to the Patriot Act Always Running

The electrifying national bestseller The Grapes of Wrath was burned and banned in 1939 in Kern County, California—the Joads' newfound home. "If that book is banned today," asked the local librarian, "what book will be banned tomorrow?" Today, about 500 books are formally challenged each year.  Why are we still so afraid of the free exchange of ideas? Does government have a legitimate interest in monitoring the flow of information or “safeguarding public morality” in the bookstore, library, or school? What have been the most innovative and successful push-backs used by booksellers and librarians in local communities when challenged?
