All About Balance

An amazing structure within our inner ear allows us to maintain balance when we turn, tilt, or nod our heads. Without it, simple head motions could bring on feelings of imbalance or vertigo. Scientists at NIDCD are working to understand how genes direct the precise formation of this structure. Doris Wu, Ph.D., of NIDCD recently worked with colleagues at Duke University and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine to discover an essential building block of this structure.
