I've created a monster. I turned my daughters loose with some consumer desktop publishing software and they are loving it. I think it's the first time that a couple of them really began to grasp what it is I do. My daughter Sam has really taken to the software. Right now she's working on a review and a tutorial and having a blast creating pages featuring pictures of her and her boyfriend at the prom. Those will be posted later. Right now you can take a look at a student ID card -- their first attempt at any kind of desktop publishing.

Creating and Fine-Tuning a Basic Student ID Card
Take a before and after look at a simple student ID card. I handed my daughter's The Print Shop Deluxe 22 -- a program they'd never used before -- and gave them the task of creating an ID card.

It took them only an hour or so to figure out the program and put together a card containing the basic information, a photo, and some clip art they liked.

Then, I applied some desktop publishing magic. OK, actually what I did was apply some of the principles of design and rules of desktop publishing to what they had created to come up with a cleaner version of their card.

See how alignment, color, font choices, and moving a few things around affected the overall look and feel of this homeschool student ID card.
