WE'RE WONDERING
Who is your favorite player so far this year? Let your answer to the
question take into consideration not only the player's tournament
achievements, but also her or his character, personality, or other
traits you think reflect positively on the sport. Be sure to tell us
why you've chosen this player. Your thoughts?

ANNIKA WILL RETIRE
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Annika Sorenstam surprised her peers and much of the golf world last
week by revealing that the 2008 tour season will be her last. The
37-year-old LPGA standout has chosen to leave the scene while at the
top of her game, not counting the 2007 swing when injury kept her
A-game from showing. "I have come back from an injury, and I feel
strong, I feel healthy," Sorenstam said. "The season has started
really well, and I'm leaving the game on my terms." Her career
highlights include 72 LPGA victories; 10 major wins; 206 top-10s; AP
Female Athlete of the Year: 2003-05; and LPGA Tour Player of the
Year: 1995, 1997-98, 2001-05. She was elected to the World Golf Hall
of Fame in 2003. Sorenstam is getting married in January, and says
she wants to start a family and focus on building the Annika brand.

REHEARSE, DON'T PRACTICE
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
We've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating. The difference
between "practice" and "rehearse" may be fractional, but if you think
of your preliminary "air" putting strokes as a rehearsal for the main
event, not just as mindless exercises, you'll be able to adjust
backswing and follow-through until they feel just right.

TOUR FEEDING ON ITS YOUNG
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
The PGA Tour focus these days is on youth. (See SHORT GAME) The
"youth" factor makes its presence known in the bodies of players like
Anthony Kim, 22, Wachovia Championship victor, and 19 other players
in their 20s who have won PGA Tour events over the last three years.
Only four of these young men have won more than once, and history has
recorded wins by men in their 20s who were never heard from again,
but there seems to be a trend. The young guns are going to provide a
big share of Tour action in the near future. In addition to Kim, the
whippersnappers to keep an eye on include these 2008 winners: Trevor
Immelman (Masters), Adam Scott (Byron Nelson Championship), and
Andres Romero (Zurich Classic).

GOLF AND MORE AT THE POCONOS
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
You might call the Pocono Mountains the Myrtle Beach of the
Northeast, if not for the number of its golf courses, at least for
their concentration and variety in a popular vacation destination.
GolfStyles Philadelphia magazine has added to its list of 100
Must-Play Courses of Greater Philadelphia for 2008, eight Pocono
Mountain courses in northern Pennsylvania. The area offers
recreation, not only for the golfer who cherishes tree-lined fairways
and expansive putting greens, but also for those who love other
outdoor activities like camping, hiking, fishing, biking, boating,
and more. Add good restaurants, antique shops, ed & breakfasts,
country inns and resorts to the mix, and you have fun for golfer and
everyone else in the family.

GAMBLERS TAKE NOTE
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Organizers of the The World Series of Golf next year in Las Vegas
think they can find 25 golfers to cough up $200,000 to enter the
contest in hopes of winning $1.5 million. Rules for the tournament,
first played last year, are loosely based on poker, with players
betting on their strokes with poker chips. Players can go all-in
after their tee shot, or fold and move on to the next hole if they
hit a lousy shot. The player with the fewest strokes each hole wins
the pot for that hole. Automatic bets, or antes, increase every three
holes, driving up betting and the pots.
In case you're interested, professionals may not enter if "they have
competed as a professional in two or more events on any professional
tour, or earned more than $50,000 in their career in golf
competitions. PGA of America members for example, also are barred.
How that affects the odds we have no idea.
