TONIGHT ON THE CBS
EVENING NEWS
Here’s an early look at what we are
working on for tonight’s broadcast of The CBS Evening News from
Anchor and Managing Editor, Katie Couric:
Hi everyone,
Senator Ted Kennedy was sent home from the hospital today after the brain
tumor diagnosis that shocked the nation yesterday. Despite the grim
prognosis for malignant glioma, the 76-year-old senator appeared in good
spirits today - even going sailing. But what's going on behind the scenes? Jeff Glor reports.
With oil and gas prices soaring, Congress gave oil execs a stern grilling
about their profits at a time when average Americans are struggling. But the
executives denied they were to blame. Anthony
Mason explains why they might be right.
Next: American Airlines today took a step that could make air travel more
expensive - charging extra for checking even one bag. Will other airlines
follow American’s move? Nancy
Cordes has that story.
In Campaign '08: The fight for Florida
was front and center today. What obstacles does Barack Obama face there? Dean Reynolds reports.
Continuing our War on Cancer
series, Dr. Jon LaPook
examines why our country is lagging behind in approving life-saving cancer
medications. Why does it take so much time - and on average more than $1
billion - to get a new drug on the market?
Finally tonight, a story you won't want to miss about rock-star status and
… American Idol.
I hope you'll join us tonight
for all this and more,
Katie

HOPE’S WISH - AN INSPIRING STORY
- Hope's Wish is based on the inspiring true story of an incredible twelve
year old girl, who after being diagnosed with a rare type of bone cancer
was offered a wish by the Charlotte,
NC Make-a-Wish Foundation.
When Hope Stout found out that there were 155 children on the waiting list
in front of her, she wished that they could have their wishes granted
first. When told the funds to do this were not available, Hope, a spirited
young girl, refused to take no for an answer. She spearheaded a
fund-raising effort with her friends and neighbors that touched the hearts
of millions. We will have Stuart and Shelby Stout in studio to discuss
their new book/memoir and how they raised more than $1,000,000 dollars in
the 191 days before Hope died to grant the wishes of 155 kids.

DOWN MARKET - It is possible to sell a home now, but sellers

SPEED DATING - Picture this:
two strangers huddled together, feverishly exchanging undercuts and jabs.
At the sound of the bell, each disengages. This activity is called speed
dating, the latest fad to seduce singles in search of love. Speed dating
has swiftly spread throughout the free world. Speed dating events are held
regularly in locales ranging from Salt Lake City
to Sydney.
At such events, a group of single men and woman gather together in one
place to meet and mingle following a strict time schedule and specific
rules. Each pair gets a few minutes to chat before they must move on to the
next ''date''. During this time you can ask your partner anything except
his or her age, occupation and place of residence. The idea is to focus on
what the person is really like. When the bell rings, regardless of how
engrossing the conversation, you move on. Thursday we will introduce you to
a few singles, and we will be giving them a lesson in speed dating.
