Wine House Cocktail Party, November 2006

Dear Criss,

Last week we showcased a selection of 'autumnal' Pinot Noir to enjoy and this week Wine House continues the Pinot Noir theme with a star from Marlborough to present as our Wine of the Week. We are also excited to announce that two extra seats have been released to the upcoming Penfolds Dinner and we take a look at some fantastic blended wines. We also invite you to use our function space for a master class tasting and give last weeks trivia another crack.

We hope you enjoy,

From the Team at Wine House

This week at Wine House -  Wine of the Week.
Mahi Pinot Noir 2007!

Tasty, refined, elegant and well-priced Marlborough Pinot!

Dubbed by some as the "new Cloudy Bay", the idea behind the wines of Mahi is to concentrate on single region wines that express the individual characteristics of the particular region and/or vineyard from which they come. This Pinot Noir is a combination of parcels from the Marlborough region, selected for their soils, aspect and character. The natural environment of high sunshine hours, clear skies, cool temperatures and sheltered valleys, combined with diverse soil profiles provide Marlborough with very favourable grape-growing conditions.

The fruit was hand-picked between March 27 and April 13, 2007, then destemmed prior to going to small vats for maceration and fermentation. The fermentation occurred with wild yeast and the skins kept in contact with the juice by regularly hand plunging. the wine was then run to barrels where it then rested for 11 months prior to being fined with organic egg whites and bottled unfiltered.

The 2007 Pinot Noir shows very intense aromatic definition with dark, red and sour cherries complementing a seductive touch of boysenberry. The medium to full bodied palate fills the mouth instantly with bursting fruit and crisp, balanced acidity. The tannins are both silky and velvety but at the same time, beautifully defined. The finish is attractively persistent, and incredibly long. Without a doubt, this Pinot is approachable now, but if you wanted to, or could find the strength to, this wine will mature well over the next 3-5 years quite easily. In our eyes, it's an absolute bargain.

$34.16 in a dozen | $37.95 per bottle

Old & Rare Wines - To blend, or not to blend!

There is a lot of hype surrounding "single vineyard", "single variety" or "single block" wines at the moment. These wines are often are held up as being the pinnacles of that expression of "place", sometimes referred to as "terroir driven". However, the fine art of wine blending is designed to highlight all the positive traits of the wine, to create a wine greater than the sum of its parts. In short, blending to perfection. Imagine if we never blended fruit? We would be left without the likes of great Bordeaux, Port, Grange, Champagne and the Super Tuscans, just to name a few. Here are a few more blends that we are lucky to have...

Warrenmang Grand Pyrenees Cabernets/Shiraz/Merlot 2001, Pyrenees, VIC.
Bazzani's version of Bordeaux!

Warrenmang's Grand Pyrenees is a classical red wine made on the lines of the honoured "Bordeaux" blends, but with an Aussie twist. This wine is an elegant combination of Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Exhibiting ripe blackberry and spice flavours, with chocolate and liquorice overtones - a trademark of Pyrenees fruit.

$26.96 in a dozen | $29.95 per bottle

Pondalowie "Vineyard Blend" Shiraz/Cabernet/Tempranillo 2005, Bendigo, VIC.

James Halliday 90 points! Uncorked - Best red wine!

A single vineyard fruit bomb! Wild berry & minty notes from the Cabernet meld with cherry Tempranillo characters to make this an aromatic wine with medium bodied shiraz fruit weight on palate. Very enjoyable to drink now, this looks set to age well for 3 to 5 years.
$17.96 in a dozen | $19.95 per bottle

Howard Park Cabernet/Merlot 1995,  Great Southern, Western Australia.
Robert Parker 91 points!

A deep scarlet/purple colour relays the richness of the wine. Fresh, fine chocolate aromatics with a background of vanillin and coffee nuanced oak. The palate is deeply flavoured with supple tannins and full of black plums and Christmas cake flavours. Ageing beautifully, this is right at point now and will be for the next 2 years.

$90 per bottle

Coriole Contour 4 Sangiovese/Shiraz 2005, McLaren Vale, SA.

Wine of the Week - Ralph Kyte-Powell
A marriage of Tuscany with McLaren Vale. Contour 4 opens with the sort of Italian deli aroma that's true to type. It suggests raspberries, mocha, spiced meats, even leather, and the palate is supple, medium bodied and savoury, finishing dry with a more-ish aftertaste.

$13.46 in a dozen | $14.95 per bottle

Clonakilla Shiraz/Viognier 2006, Canberra, ACT.
James Halliday 96 points!
Wine Advocate 95 points!

Soft, supple, and seductive, it reveals honeyed notes in the nose along with blackberry, cassis, and floral characteristics. This finesse-filled, hedonistically as well as intellectually satisfying Australian red should be drunk over the next 5-7+ years.
$100.00 per bottle

Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon 2007, Margaret River, WA.

Infamous WA Producer!

The one and only white blend addition is not one to be sneezed at. The WA brother of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc, this Sauvignon dominant blend is light and tangy, with pretty mint-accented green apple and passion fruit flavors. Semillon adds some nice complexity. Lingering gently on the fresh it has a very harmonious finish. Drink now.
$22.46 in a dozen | $24.95 per bottle

No correct answer was received so we repeat the question with a hint... Dalwhinnie.
