TAX HOLIDAYS
Some states have a variety of tax holidays, days when you can buy certain
products without paying tax on them. Most of us are familiar with the
school clothing/supplies holidays, but a few states are now doing
hurricane and energy saving item tax holidays as well. To see if your
state has tax holidays that can save you money, when they are, along with
links to approved item lists and other information, go to...
http://www.taxadmin.org/fta/rate/sales_holiday.html
Most of the hurricane holidays are imminent, so check your dates soon.
NOTE TO FLORIDA RESIDENTS: If you are looking for your hurricane holiday,
your state legislature decided to skip it this year, sorry.
POST IT…on your computer and your calendar.

DELICIOUS COOKIES FOR FOOD ALLERGY SUFFERERS
Millions of people all around the world suffer from food allergies. The
number of children alone, with food allergies, has doubled over the last
10 years. It can be very difficult for families to find products to take
the place of the foods with common allergens. Thankfully, there are
people out there working on new products, and I’m happy to tell you about
a new line of crisp, crunchy cookies that are made without gluten, dairy
milk, butter, eggs, casein, peanuts or tree nuts. For those of you who
are dealing with severe food allergies, they don’t even allow these
ingredients in their bakery, and test all ingredient deliveries for cross
contamination. Dr. Lucy has come up with some amazing cookies that taste
even better than regular ones. I don’t know how she did it, but never
underestimate a mother’s love (her son suffers from food allergies).
There are 4 kinds available…Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal, Sugar, and most
people’s favorite Cinnamon Thins (my daughter and I fight over them ;-).
The cookies are also VERY low in fat, for anyone dieting out there. Dr.
Lucy’s is currently taking orders for the USA, but if you have an
international address you can contact them at info@drlucys.com to see what
they might be able to arrange. They are available in some grocery stores
(Farm Fresh in VA, among others). Dr. Lucy obviously has a heart for
those suffering in this way, as she also provides free sample cookies for
doctors with food allergy patients, as well as allergy support groups.
These cookies are a great idea for kids to share with their classrooms;
when it is their turn to bring treats, the other kids will never know they
are “special” cookies. After you try them, I’m guessing you’ll want to
share them with others and get them in your local stores. So try them,
share them with other food allergy sufferers, contact your local stores
and ask them to start carrying them. These cookies are too good and too
healthy to keep them a secret. To order, or for more information, go to…
http://www.drlucys.com/
POST IT…on your computer, on your shopping list, send to friends who
suffer from food allergies, and contact your local grocery stores to carry
them.

PROTECT YOUR FOOD FROM PLASTIC COMPOUNDS
Recent reports have found that more chemical compounds leech into our food
from plastic containers than was originally thought. Many of us use a lot
more plastic containers than we realize. So consider replacing plastic
containers with glass or metal ones. Other items you might not think of
that come into contact with food/drink…water bottles, travel mugs,
measuring spoons/cups, cutting boards, utensils, pitchers, mixing bowls,
etc. Here’s a link to an article with even more ideas on avoiding the
chemicals…

POST IT…on your fridge “to do” list.

CLOTHES (& Music) ON TV and IN MOVIES
How many times have you seen something on a TV show or in a movie, and
thought, “Wow, that’s such a cute outfit,” “That shirt would look so nice
on John,” “Where can I find that purse!?,” or “What song was on that
show?”? Well, here’s the resource to answer all of those questions. Go
to…
www.seenon.com
On this website you can click on TV shows or movies, find outfits, music,
or other products featured in various episodes, and even order them
through the site. You can also click on particular characters in shows for
things they were wearing. The site isn’t comprehensive at this time, but
the selection is a good one and appears to be growing. POST IT…near your
TV Guide.

RECIPE: FOR THAT INGREDIENT
It has been sitting in your cupboard for an eternity. That lone can or
package of some ingredient that you bought at one time or another and
never got around to using. You can’t even find the recipe you were going
to use it with. Now you can find a way to use it without pouring through
piles of recipes. Go to…
http://allrecipes.com/Search/Ingredients.aspx
Enter the ingredient that you don’t have a recipe for, and then hit “Go”
or enter. You will usually get a good variety of recipes to choose from.
For example, I had a package of dry leek soup mix that had me at a loss.
I entered it in, and now I have some veggie dip recipes and a slow cooked
chicken dish to try. Hey, I’m guessing if it can come up with recipes for
leek soup mix, then it can come up with recipes for your ingredient. It’s
a great way to clean out your cupboard a bit, without being wasteful. You
may even find a new favorite recipe. POST IT…on the inside of the kitchen
cupboard where you store your food, and/or with your recipes.
