TONIGHT ON THE CBS
EVENING NEWS
Here’s an early look at what we are
working on for tonight’s broadcast of The CBS Evening News from Anchor
and Managing Editor, Katie Couric
Hi everyone. I hope you had a great weekend.
As more Democratic support coalesces around Barack Obama, he's dealing with
increased scrutiny. John McCain and Obama traded shots over the Illinois senator's
foreign policy expertise. Obama also took aim at Republicans, warning them
not to "attack my wife or family," after an online video emerged
questioning Michelle Obama's patriotism. As the battle heats up, our political team reports from the field
… and will have the very latest from each of the three campaigns latest
tonight.
Next: A massive child custody case got underway today, and the logistics are
daunting. Hearings involve more than 400 children from the Texas polygamist sect - and each case is
set to appear before a judge. Mark
Strassmann will explain what happens next.
Also tonight: A certain fire-retardant chemical can be found everywhere from
car seats to children's toys. It's supposed to save lives. But could it
actually be hazardous for you and your family? Wyatt Andrews has the CBS News exclusive report.
In January, Byron Pitts told the
heartbreaking story of Iraq
war veteran Carmelo Rodriguez. He died, his family claims, after a military
doctor misdiagnosed his cancer. However, under current law, his family cannot
sue the military for malpractice. His story has sparked numerous calls to
change the law. Tonight, an update … that could answer some of the
Rodriguez family's prayers.
Finally, it's the number of strings on a violin, points on a compass, and of
wings on a butterfly. But for some gas station owners, the number four is
becoming a nightmare. Thousands of old pumps in this country only list price
per gallon up to $3.99 … and that's trouble in the days when gas tops
the $4-mark!
I hope you'll join us tonight for all this and more, Katie
