===========
Thanks to the people who wrote in last week with suggestions and even some
quick tips to publish. I suppose if I get enough cool tips I can start
publishing them, so if you have some experience about anything game
dev-related that you'd like to share in 500 words or less, please do send
it my way at newsletter@gamedev.net. Placing [tip] in the subject line
will ensure that it doesn't get junked by accident.
One of the suggestions that came my way was doing editorials. We used to
run those in years past, but contributions from staff members trailed off
and I started rambling on in such a fashion as to almost be
unprofessional, so we stopped. While I don't think regular editorials will
become the norm, I do think we'll have some at least every other week. To
start, I just got back from the ION conference in Seattle, which is a
three-day conference on online game development. The topic of the
conference notwithstanding, the main reason I attend conferences and the
reason I always encourage other people to do so is to meet other people in
the industry. Sure, we make billions upon billions of dollars a year as an
industry, but that doesn't mean there's vast amount of dicsonnect between
our peers. It's amazing how many people know each other in this business,
and knowing the right person is all you need to achieve your goals.
Okay, so conferences still aren't for everyone, as the expense can be
prohibitive. No problem, check the IGDA for a chapter near you or go
online and look up other developers and studios in your area. You can even
check out GDNet's Gathering section (http://snipr.com/29p4t) for members
near you. Get out and do the face-to-face thing, even if it scares you,
because you never know who you might meet that will open all the doors for
you.
Finally, another suggestion was to add brief notes about what's in each
Daily GameDev.net entry, which I did - let me know if you think they don't
accurately represent the posts.
