  Inside: This Week in Autos
In his cover story this week "GM: Live Green or Die," Detroit bureau chief David Welch does a deep dive on GM's efforts to develop new, more fuel-efficient technologies and cars, and comes away with as many questions as answers. Welch gets inside the company's traditionally insular and conservative culture to show the challenges that CEO Rick Wagoner and Vice-Chairman Bob Lutz have had in playing catch-up with Toyota's fuel-efficient vehicles. But he points out that the company needs to "cram 10 years' worth of testing into two" in order to deliver on Wagoner's promise of having the electric-powered Chevy Volt in showrooms by 2010. The fear is that they fail to do so—or even worse make it happen but that one of their competitors beats them to it. Elsewhere this week, we looked at what car makers are doing to cope with the growing number of graying Boomer buyers and columnist Ed Wallace once again ripped into the oil companies, government and investment banks for saying that the real reason behind high gas prices is speculation and greed. Last, we reviewed the surprisingly good Pontiac G8. Enjoy.

Given Japan's car market has been shrinking for years, reaching a 25-year low in 2007 million, execs at Japan's car makers must be reasonably pleased that sales in 2008 have risen in three out of the first four months of the year. In April, for instance, sales excluding Japan's 660cc mini-cars, rose 6.9% to 232,993 vehicles. closequote
